The fine dining establishment newly minted D.C. restaurateurs Sachin Mahajan and Ricky Singh worked up in their minds becomes reality Thursday, December 21, with the official unveiling of Karma Modern Indian.

The new Penn Quarter restaurant (611 Eye Street NW) is on a mission to marry local ingredients to traditional Indian dishes like murgh makhani (butter chicken). New Delhi native Ajay Kumar has been tapped to lead the multicultural melding process which has so far yielded results ranging from chile-powered venison and duck with grilled okra to masala-style lobster and kulfi ice cream flanked by gingerbread.

Customers can sample the aforementioned items along with other small plates and larger format selections from various vantage points in the sleek new eatery. There’s 12 seats placed around the semi-circular counter peering into the open kitchen; stools planted in front of the dedicated bar; several two- and four-tops sprinkled about the main dining room; and semi-private dining spaces off to the side.

Cocktails run $12 to $25; Old Fashioneds and Negronis are joined by coffee-fueled vodka drinks and other house creations. Beers range from $7 to $14 a pop; including local producers such as Stillwater Brewing in Maryland as well as well known imports. The list does feature one priceless description: Heineken Light is characterized as “basically water.”

The restaurant is projected to operate from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and from 11:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday. The newcomer will be closed on Christmas Day.

Status: Scheduled to open at 5 p.m. 611 Eye Street NW; website.
