The day before Halloween and more

Here is one of the highlights of my walks. It's a small coke froster ($1.47). Did I mention how therapeutic walks can be? Especially on a gorgeous day like today.

I brought the pumpkin into the kitchen so we can carve it tonight.

My nephew is making a short visit from Florida this weekend, so it will be nice to see him, it's been a couple of years since we saw him last. He's a big boy of 20 years old now.

L taught me a lot about the first World War last night as she studied for her History test. It started from one small incident and became a world war within a short time due to various alliances between countries. And we became aware of how history repeats itself. It was also interesting to learn of Canada's role in it and of the life changing impacts of war. She is not very hopeful for her generation as we destroy our environment and fail to keep the peace. It seems the baby boomers are the lucky ones having lived in a golden age of prosperity.

Flu Shots

Spent some time today adding a new picture to my blog header and to my profile. Practice makes perfect.

Forgot to mention L and I saw this fabulous rainbow as we left the doctor's office in the middle of the week. It was after a rainfall I believe. I have to start taking a camera around or maybe get a new cellphone as they all have cameras these days.

The kids got their flu shots today, it's that time of year. Hopefully I can get mine next week.

We did Swiss Chalet rotisserie chicken for dinner tonight, take-out. They have the best fries and sauce. I made some middle eastern almond cookies from a cookbook I have called 'Street food from around the world' by Troth Wells. It's a simple recipe for a non-baker like me and most of us liked it. It's also nutritious I think, it's full of crushed almonds and I used the new 30% whole wheat flour and 'only' 2 tablespoons of butter.

Well, time to call it a day.

The True Meaning of Fall and more

On a crisp fall walk this morning the wind blew gentle showers of bronzed leaves from the trees and across my path. Quintessential fall! There were moms strolling with cute little babies in their strollers. A handsome young cop returned my smile and unknowingly made my day.

Meeting a friend at a restaurant in a short while, we're using one of the meal coupons in my huge coupon book. My neat freak husband is driving me crazy. I was searching around for this packaged kit meal I need to marinate for dinner but he was cleaning yesterday and anyway I finally located it stuffed in the jam cupboard. I'm organized myself, so when I leave things lying around it's usually for a purpose and I really don't like people cleaning up after me. Well, I guess I shouldn't complain, it's all relative.

I was at the hairdresser yesterday, they had incense burning in the shop. They are Armenian people. It has a really strong smell, just like in a church so I had to tell them it was a really strong smell (as I had to be sitting in there for awhile). I noticed one of the customers sitting with her sweater sleeve across her nose. The hairdresser's wife told me she clears her household clutter twice a year. That sounds like a good idea.

Well, have to run.

At the eye specialist and more

So I was at the eye specialist today. I have a small cataract in one eye that he monitors every year. It's stable, but he said when the time comes, it'll take him about 7 minutes to remove it at the hospital. He said I may never need bifocals (reading glasses), if I don't mind just taking my glasses off so I can see the fine print. But he gave me a prescription anyway, it just depends what I'm comfortable with. He says some people feel old wearing them and in my case, I'll be fine just taking my glasses off to read if it's not too annoying. It may be because I'm near-sighted to begin with. I'm never one to be able to make a decision so I'll put this on hold for awhile. He said he took his son for hockey practice at 4.30am this morning (busy as he is).

I went to the gym afterward and did a treadmill workout. I haven't done that since summer started, but it's raining and cold today. My heart rate is about 20% less on the treadmill since I first joined the gym almost 3 years ago. That's a good thing. These days I'm aiming for daily exercise. I do aerobics once a week although I'll miss tomorrow as something came up.

So L submitted her RCM Grade 8 piano certificate and her Grade 2 theory certificate along with the marks to her Guidance teacher, so she will be getting a Grade 12 high school credit for it.

At the Orthodontist and more

K had a great checkup at the orthodontist today. They said his teeth were really clean. He also did well on the latest English test, so we have a reprieve. Oh, the receptionist at the orthodontist is still recovering from her offspring leaving for university this fall. It doesn't seem to help that she has a few other kids still at home. I told her it's going to be the same for me.

It seems a really good tennis racket costs about $175...hmm. L is expensive.

Had no inspiration as to what to make for dinner today, then I found some President's Choice Korma curry sauce in the cupboard and decided to make a chicken breast curry, it came out great. The chicken breast is really tender if you remember not to simmer it for more than 12 to 15 minutes depending on how large the breasts are.

Terrible about the California wildfires. 250,000 is a lot of people evacuated.

The weekend and more

Looks like we're headed for a 22C (about 76F) day and it's nice and sunny. Maybe I can go for a walk later on.

L went to a birthday party last night, midnight pickup. Yes, the teenager years are in full swing. Luckily her devoted dad doesn't mind chauffeuring her all around the place. Her tennis teacher recommended that she get a better tennis racket, it seems the inexpensive one she owns has very weak strings. Who knew? She had a great progress report from school, only one 'good', the rest were 'excellent'. And the 'good' was on one out of about 10 sub-ratings from the History teacher. Her homeroom teacher says she's a role model.

I found some music for 'High School Musical' and K was picking it out on the piano last night. He writes good poems and the English teacher likes his oral presentations. I thought his music homework was good, he was asked to interpret a song he likes and hand it in with the CD so the teacher can mark it. Today we will work on calculating the surface area of a triangular prism. It's a tough one and he has to practice the formula. It occurred to me that maybe he doesn't understand what area means. I think I may be on to something.

I'm going to make a soup with Chinese herbs, medicinal ingredients and meat today. These herbs are purported to be good for all kinds of ailments and aid the immune system. I just like the taste.

I just answered a phone call from a charity begging for money, at 10 am on a Sunday morning! It's maddening. Well, I guess Christmas is approaching.

Lots of medical appointments this week, K has to see the orthodontist tomorrow, I see my eye doctor on Tuesday, L has a doctor appointment on Wednesday. M is overdue to set up his eye doctor appointment. He doesn't wear glasses because he doesn't feel ready for reading glasses.

I'm getting some bags ready for the CP truck which is coming soon. There is always clutter to donate. They need fall clothing this time of year. Cannot get M to part with anything.

Later...
I just noticed the 'Skillet Sensations' Stouffer meals that I spoke about are regularly $4.97. No wonder that lady had 10 bags. Still, I'll try more when they go back on sale.

Skillet Sensations and more

I just microwaved a package of Stouffers Skillet Sensations Chicken Alfredo, it took about 10 minutes and it's really good. I got it on sale at No Frills grocery store for $1.97 when I noticed a lady with about 10 bags in her cart. (She said it was good). It's also got the health check symbol on the bag. Great for quick snacks and hot lunches, whatever. Quite a generous 2 portion size full of meat and vegetables as well as pasta.

Cleaned up the yard a bit today and more

Cleaned up the yard a bit today, ironically, the grass and flowers have never looked better. Waiting for a thunderstorm but the weather is almost balmy. Met a friend for an inexpensive lunch nearby her office. She's selling me a coupon book fund-raiser, her daughter wants to pay for a trip abroad with the school band, a worthy cause and I do use coupons.

I'm helping K prepare for a bunch of quizzes in various subjects. I'm glad I have a university degree, who knew I'd be a teacher one day? Poetry, art, music, math, you name it! Good thing I'm a quick learner. Now that he's in grade 7, the lessons are getting harder for me to grasp. My lunch friend today has similar issues with her grade 8 son. They're going to an interview to ask the teacher 'how focussed does he appear to be in class'? K still watches 'Franklin the Turtle' some mornings, so I think some kids take longer to mature. I was showing him the article about the $4 million dollar antique Rolls Royce yesterday and he said 'hey, wait a minute, a Ferrari costs only half a million, what gives?' So, he's thinking...about what interests him.

I'm doing a jerk pork roast for dinner. Haven't made that in ages. Gosh, where does the day go?

Oh my friend told me that once she checked her credit card statement and discovered that a waitress in a restaurant had put a '1' in front of her tip to increase the amount on the slip. She disputed it and didn't have to pay, but of course the waitress had long since left the restaurant.

Rambling on and on

Went for a walk this afternoon after running my various errands. Ran into a friend of a friend and chatted for a bit. It's a nice fall day, considering they were calling for showers. A lot of people have their fall displays and pumpkins out, as well as their summer pots as we have yet to have the first frost. I was thinking I should clear out the garden a bit this weekend before it gets too cold. As always, the house needs a good dusting.

Made a broccoli salad today, I think the only thing healthy in that salad is the broccoli, as it's full of bacon bits, sugar and mayonnaise, albeit light mayo. We'll see how everyone likes it.

K is not doing well at school, have to have a serious talk with him this evening to see what's going on (besides the usual). I think I have to help him study for some tests this week whether he likes it or not. He's not the only one, but that is not a comfort. Well, if life were perfect, it wouldn't be normal, that's how I comfort myself.

I got some new lightweight Adidas sneakers at Winners. At that store, it's whatever you find. Well these were the perfect size, price and width and I've been wearing them the past few days. They are making great new shoes these days. These ones say they are breathable, in-built cushioning and anti-bacterial. I believe the cushioning part, great for the knees on pavement.

I notice I'm getting more far-sighted, maybe I'll have to get reading glasses at my checkup next week.

I caught chef Rob Feenie on a Foodtv special last night, it was sort of a biography. He's a Canadian chef in Western Canada with a restaurant called Lumiere. He has gained a lot of weight, he's only 42 with 2 toddlers and a beautiful second wife. He looks like a heart attack waiting to happen, sadly.

Well, that's enough rambling today, better go accomplish something.

Omega-3 fruit chews and more

new word: 'fucci' means 'fake gucci'

I located some purified Omega-3 orange flavoured fruit chews at Costco, K loves them (limit of 1 or 2 per day). I've been reading more and more about omega-3 benefits to the point that doctors seem to be recommending it along with vitamin D. We drink a lot of milk so we should be ok for Vitamin D.

Food finds and more

Food finds

I enjoy going to different grocery stores from time to time, they all have a bit different stuff. I was watching 'Ricardo and Friends' on Food TV and he was creating a Lebanese buffet. So I guess I was inspired and picked up some Babaghanouj(eggplant) and Tahini(sesame seed) dips, just small containers as well as some ready made falafels (chick pea patties). I also got some grain crackers called 'Lavash' for the dips and some whole wheat pita bread. I've always liked Babaghanouj, I just forgot as it's been awhile. I think the Tahini will be good with the falafels and pitabread as a sort of sandwich, with some chopped romaine lettuce and cucumbers. I don't own a food processor so I bought the dips, am hesitating on getting one as I don't want it to become one of many unused appliances I own.

The other thing I got was chicken hot dogs and I've been buying chicken baloney. They seem to have half the fat if not the sodium and taste pretty good.

I also got these yummy one bite butter tarts by 'The Bakers Oven'. They also make the best chocolate cakes from cocoa (less fat than chocolate) which I didn't get. I also got some one bite oatmeal raisin cookies. How's that for sensible eating while allowing yourself some treats? It's all about portion control.

19th Wedding Anniversary

It's our 19th wedding anniversary today as well as Thanksgiving Monday. We're not doing anything special. M is mowing the grass, K is playing video games and L is resting, she has a lot of homework this weekend and is still not finished. We watched that 'beauty and the geek' show for a bit. It seems a bit different but I didn't like how they made the girls dress like half naked bimbos all the time.

It's so muggy outside, I don't think I'll go for a walk. It would be great to lose 10 more pounds, I think that would be perfect... won't make me look any younger, but I'm sure I'll feel great. Some people have great will power with food, but I'll just continue with the healthy eating long term approach. I've lost 8 pounds in the past year this way. We've pretty much switched to whole wheat bread all the time and I'm now avoiding the purchase of fatty dips and looking out for new, healthy recipes.

I'd like to start using ebay and similar facilities...it seems really popular and a great way to acquire scarce concert tickets I understand. Someone told me there's something called Craigslist that is like Ebay but with no fees.

I learned that 'haldi' is another word for turmeric spice. Turmeric is supposed to be good for your immune system and arthritis. It's available in capsule form.

Provincial elections on Wednesday...I'd like to be more up to date on all the issues but the interest just isn't there. The Green party seems like a worthwhile cause.

Working at the food bank

K and I worked at the Salvation Army food bank today for 3 hours. He needs volunteer hours for his school. It's hard work, but less lifting than last time. This time we got to sort out the food shelves, checking for expired food, etc. I felt like I was in my own kitchen clearing out the cupboards. Hard work, as I said. But I did notice a neat product, Lysol disinfecting wipes for cleaning kitchens and bathrooms, I think I'll get some. Not environmentally friendly perhaps, but good for quick cleanups. Kyle noticed some cinnamon roll flavour Quaker instant oatmeal, so we can try that too. The young pastor came in and thanked us while we were there. Everyone seems to be getting younger these days, unless it's me aging (sigh). The supervisor looked like he was in high school but he assured me he graduated 10 years ago and in fact was newly married.

We ate sushi last night with my sister and her family at an all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant in Markham called Nagoya, to celebrate Thanksgiving with them. The restaurant boasts 110 items. These restaurants seem to be popping up everywhere. Nagoya was very good, we enjoyed everything and tried a few new things like 'sushi pizza'. We had some shark fin sushi. L then remembered her teacher telling her horrible stories of how they come by this shark fin in the far east. The fishermen cut off the sharks' fins and let them sink to the bottom of the ocean where they bleed to death. Well, never really thought the taste was anything special, even though it's considered a delicacy, so we decided not to eat that anymore for humane reasons. Apparently veal is another similar story, but we don't eat much of that either.

Canadian Thanksgiving weekend

Thanksgiving weekend is upon us. It seems we'll be having record high temperatures, it will seem more like July weather, weird stuff. I bought our pumpkin today anyway, the one we'll carve for Halloween. I picked up some Lindt Halloween chocolates for my favourite exercise instructor and I bought a Christmas gift!

L needs some DVDs to save videos for school. Have you noticed how many different kinds you can buy? DVD+R DVD-R....apparently they are the same as writeable CDs, they just are able to hold more data. So apparently to create a DVD, you save as type 'DVD'. Think I have to do more research on this.

Lately we seem to be getting so many calls from telemarketers at all hours of the day. I've decided to stop answering them. And they ring long enough to leave a message, so annoying. I get a lot of 'windows and doors' and 'house alarm' people, not to mention charity.
