Ashis Sarkar

Prof. Ashis Sarkar is a distinguished academician with a brilliant career (Presidencian, NationalScholar, Subrata Sengupta Medalist, Gold Medalist and a Ph.D. of Calcutta University). As amember of West Bengal Education Service his teaching career began at Chandernagore College(1982). He also served Govt. Colleges like, Presidency College (1986 – 91) and Haldia Govt.College (1991 – 96). He was selected in the West Bengal Senior Education Service and joinedPresidency College as Professor and Head of Geography (1996 – 2013). His sustained effortsfurthered the cause of the discipline of geography as well as that of the department in PresidencyCollege (now Presidency University) with a new vision and modernisation. He is a very popularteacher and admired by his students, most of whom are now successful researchers, teachers,professors, civil servants, and corporate professionals spread all over West Bengal, India, USA,UK, Spain, Germany, France, Japan and Australia.With a keen interest in applied geomorphology, settlement geography, landuse and resourcemanagement, development issues, quantitative analysis, cartography and geoinformatics, he hasalready finished 5 research projects as principal investigator, supervised quite a number of M.Scdissertations, M.Phil and Ph.D. research, and presented papers in national / internationalseminars on about 94 occasions. Till now, he has authored 9 books, 65 research papers and 40research articles in eminent journals.Professionally, he is a member / resource person in the academic bodies of a number ofinstitutions (Govt. and Private) and life fellow of societies like, Geographical Society of India,Indian Society of Landscape, Ecology
