It’s not hard to figure out why doughnuts are so adored — it is fried dough after all. But then again, it’s so much more than that, as this old school treat evokes memories of dad coming home with a dozen on Sunday morning. Or that hero co-worker who brings them into the office to break up a long work week. Simply put, the doughnut is timeless. The rising quantity of locally run bakeries, cafes, all day breakfast joints and doughnut shops in the Lowcountry should make it pretty easy to avoid chains like Krispy Kreme or Dunkin’ Donuts. Whether it’s a weekend treat with the family, quick breakfast on the way to work, or that reliable companion while reading the newspaper, these are the nine places in Charleston to go for a delicious gourmet doughnut (and probably a great cup of coffee too).
