Ever since pitmaster John Lewis came to town with his brand of Texas barbecue and knee-weakening brisket, people have hungered for his restaurant to open. Well, tomorrow is the day for platters of smoked meats and fresh sides. Lewis Barbecue will open the doors at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 28.
Shortly before the friends and family event this weekend, Lewis Barbecue opened the doors to give photographer Leslie McKellar a first peek at the dining room and spacious courtyard. The look of the space comes from efforts by designer Betsy Berry of B. Berry Interior, builder John Stapleton of Lennon Construction, and architect Rhett Morgan of The Middleton Group. The interiors are clean and modern with several nods to Texas, including an 8’ longhorn by Becca Barnet, horseshoe wall by Suzanne Allen Studio, and imported Oaxacan tile on the service counter.
Guests visiting the 464 Nassau St. establishment order at the counter and then take their bounty to one of the 100 seats inside or 200 seats outside. There's an outdoor and indoor bar for plenty of chances to sample beverage director Roderick Weaver's agua frescas or a local beer. Lewis Barbecue opens Tuesday through Sunday with kitchen service from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.; bar service extends to midnight.
