Yakima County Jail Sales Tax Increase (August 2012)
A Yakima County Jail Sales Tax Increase measure was on the August 7, 2012 ballot in Yakima County.
This measure was defeated
- YES 8,668 (46.77%)
- NO 9,864 (53.23%)[1]
This measure sought to increase the current sales tax to one set at a rate of $.08 per $1 purchased for a period of ten years in order to help fund the county jail operations. If it had been approved, the increase was expected to generate $2.8 million a year. Money had been received by a jail bed-renting program, but the county lost that contract and now have a budget deficit and had hoped this sales tax would fill the money gap.[2]
