Therese M. Stewart is a judge for Division 2 of the California 1st District Court of Appeal. She assumed office on November 30, 2022. Her current term ends on December 31, 2026.

Stewart ran for re-election for the Division 2 judge of the California 1st District Court of Appeal. She won in the retention election on November 8, 2022.

Stewart was appointed an associate justice of the California First District Court of Appeal, Division Two by Governor Jerry Brown on June 28, 2014, to replace James Lambden. She was confirmed by the California Commission on Judicial Appointments on July 17. Stewart is the first openly lesbian justice to serve on the California Courts of Appeal.[1][2]

She was retained by voters in 2014.[3][4]

Stewart was confirmed as the presiding justice of the California First District Court of Appeal, Division Two on November 30, 2022.[5]

Stewart received her B.A. from Cornell University in 1978 and her J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law in 1981.[1][6]
