Steve Bernard was a judge of the Colorado Court of Appeals. He assumed office on July 5, 2006. He left office on January 1, 2022.
Bernard was first appointed to the court by Governor Bill Owens (R) in May 2006 and took the oath of office on July 5, 2006. Bernard was retained by voters in 2008 and again in 2016.[1]
On September 28, 2018, Bernard became chief judge-designate of the Colorado Court of Appeals, succeeding Judge Alan Loeb. Bernard officially became chief judge on December 27, 2018.[2]
Education
Bernard received his B.A. in political science from the University of Colorado in 1975 and his J.D. from the University of Colorado Law School in 1978.[3]
Career
Bernard began his legal career with the district attorney’s office for Colorado’s Seventeenth Judicial District (now Adams and Broomfield Counties) in 1978. He served as a deputy district attorney from 1978 to 1982 and became a chief trial deputy in 1982. Bernard became the assistant district attorney in 1993, assisting the district attorney with office management, while staying involved with trials and appellate litigation of significant cases. Bernard was also a frequent lecturer on topics ranging from the death penalty and evidence to constitutional law and trial techniques. Bernard retired from this position in December 2004.
In January 2005, Bernard became a chief deputy district attorney with the Nineteenth Judicial District (Weld County). He filed felony cases, trained new prosecutors and police officers, and conducted grand jury litigation.[3]
