|I am Roberto Reveles, a candidate for the Arizona State Senate representing Legislative District 7. My employment in the public and private sector and my volunteer service in retirement demonstrate the values I bring for bold, creative, and responsive leadership to resolve divisive issues. My leadership skills and experience in bringing people together will benefit the communities within our district. My work ethic, social conscience, and civic values were formed by my childhood in the small mining town of Miami, Arizona. At that time, Miami was a totally segregated mining town with workers from all corners of the globe. It was an experience that formed my social conscience and passion for civic engagement dedicated to improving peoples’ lives. It sparked my interest in learning how to work collaboratively with people from diverse backgrounds. That collaborative interest was fortified by my military service in Europe and my education at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. Although I had planned to pursue a career as a diplomat, I ended up working for 24 years on the congressional staff of 5 Members of Congress, including Arizona’s Stewart L. Udall and Morris K. Udall. During my second career, I worked for a mining company. I promoted the adoption of environmental values within an industry challenged by concern about mining-related impacts and enabled constructive dialogue between natural resource developers and environmental advocates.
- Consensus Through Collaborative Talk Over my entire life, I’ve been striving for constructive solutions to divisive issues that affect all of us. Arizona continues to face conflicts over the integrity of our elections, disagreements over the role of immigrants in our economy, challenges to reproductive and other health access issues, inadequate funding of education, the impact of natural resource development on the environment, and the need for an effective transition to a green energy economy. I’m no stranger to confronting disagreements, and I’m proud of creating coalitions of people dedicated to working toward achieving consensus through respectful civil dialogue. As a senator, I will be committed to overcoming divisiveness.
- Community Needs LD7 is one of the largest legislative districts in the state in terms of geographic area and one of the most complex. It has everything from heavily industrialized mining areas to numerous state parks and spectacular wilderness areas. Like the landscape itself, LD7 supports a wide variety of local economies, including ranching, forestry, mining, freight hauling, outdoor recreation and tourism, and many small businesses. For LD7 to thrive, we must provide adequate funding for our rural schools, opportunities for sustainable development, affordable housing, and expanded rural healthcare. I have a history of promoting constructive policies to overcome the challenges rural families face.
- Action Plan Together, we can promote public education, revitalize our economy, provide good-paying jobs, stimulate the construction of adequate housing, improve transportation systems, enable access to affordable health care, safeguard everyone’s personal freedoms, protect women’s right to reproductive health, and conserve the natural wonders of our area. I believe that all rural Arizonans deserve to achieve the American Dream, as I have worked hard to do all my life. It is our responsibility to preserve our democratic republic for our children, grandchildren, and those who come after us. I respectfully ask that you place on me the responsibility of representing you as your State Senator in the Legislature.
The public policy issues I feel I can positively impact are diverse and rooted in the challenges faced by rural Arizonans. We must strive for adequate public education funding, employment opportunities, personal freedoms, accessible health care, and reproductive rights. Conserving natural resources and the unique ecology of our district are critical for the future of our state.
I will emulate the careers of Stewart and Mo Udall.
Relentless, by Luis Miranda Jr. This book reflects many of the challenges and opportunities for impacting public policies through personal involvement in advocacy.
Elected officials must be willing to listen to their constituents to identify community needs and draft an action plan on how to resolve those needs.
I am inquisitive, I engage people with different opinions, and I look to achieve consensus through civil dialogue.
An elected official’s core responsibility is to identify challenges and opportunities, advocate to meet those challenges, and fulfill opportunities.
Dare to be different.
I will never forget the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec 7, 1941, when I was nine years old. I was playing outside and heard women crying. Every radio in the neighborhood was turned up to full volume. Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor.
My very first job was as a shoe-shine boy during my high school years in Miami, Arizona’s shoe shine parlor. It encouraged my view that there is dignity in every form of work.
Time to Say Goodby
Confronting and accepting challenges that open opportunities for discussing controversial policies have always been a welcome struggle for me.
The ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature must be based on respect for each other's responsibilities and independence.
Arizona’s greatest challenges are water, education, affordable housing, personal freedoms, access to health care, and the environment.
No. The essence of democracy is that there is no governing class you are born into.
It is absolutely critical to build relationships with other legislators. It is important to develop respect for other viewpoints and agree on the need to arrive at consensus.
I will model myself after Stewart and Mo Udall, native Arizonans who represented both rural and urban community interests and established working relationships among political parties. They were both good at reaching across the aisle to create constructive coalitions.
Miss Cheves, my hometown librarian, motivated me by reminding me from time to time with her message, “Robert, dare to dream big dreams.” I continue to dream big dreams.
Yes, the legislature should oversee and grant emergency powers as necessary in emergency situations.
The first bill I would introduce would be to guarantee adequate funding for quality public education from Pre-K through post-secondary education that will provide skill sets to enter the workforce or to continue to higher education. I support lifetime learning. It’s important for people to be motivated, even post formal education, to keep learning.

Critical elements for responsible representation demand financial transparency. We must ensure that official responsibility is based on being accountable to the community in general and not responsive to a financial interest.
