The Oregon Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction is an executive position in the Oregon state government.

As part of Gov. John Kitzhaber's 2011 reorganization of the entire state education system, the official title and duties of superintendent of public instruction fall to the governor. However, the governor is able to select a deputy in order to oversee the Oregon Department of Education. Thus, the deputy superintendent is the chief administrative officer for all public school matters.[1]

Current officeholder

The current Oregon Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction is Charlene Williams (nonpartisan). Williams assumed office in 2023.

Authority

The office of Oregon Superintendent of Public Instruction is established in Chapter 326 of the Oregon Statutes.

Chapter 326.111: Department of Education; composition; functions

Qualifications

The governor serves as the superintendent of schools following approval of Senate Bill 552 in 2011. The deputy superintendent is appointed by the governor and serves at the governor's pleasure. Elections

Oregon state government organizational chart

In the past the superintendent was elected for a term of four years. However, this changed in 2011. As part of Gov. John Kitzhaber's reorganization of the entire state education system, the governor began appointing the position after Susan Castillo left office in the summer of 2012.[2]
