|Mont Handley is the Entrepreneur in Residence and Associate Director of Purdue University Northwest's Commercialization and Manufacturing Excellence Center in Hammond. Mont oversees a facility dedicated to commercializing innovative, new products and mentoring early stage startups in the region. He is a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army Military Police Corp from 1982-1984 after graduating from Merrillville (Indiana) High School. He graduated from Purdue University in 1988 on the G.I. Bill.
Prior to his appointment at CMEC, Mont invented and patented a sustainable, horticultural growing media that is made primarily from recycled paper. He secured a prestigious Small Business Innovation Research grant from the Environmental Protection Agency to prove his product was scientifically feasible. Mont was invited to pitch his invention, PittMoss, on ABC Television's Shark Tank (April 2015). His pitch netted a seed round investment of $1.2 Million from celebrity investor, Mark Cuban and a group of Pittsburgh area Angel investors. He was featured on ABC's Beyond the Tank (April 2016).
Mont returned to the region and became a live-in caregiver to his father until his passing. He currently lives in Chesterton, is a board member and the largest single shareholder of the five year old PittMoss.
- Supporting a culture of entrepreneurship will lead to a diverse and healthier economy for Northwest Indiana.
- For too long, Northwest Indiana has been teaching students to be workers, and they should be teaching them to be innovators and business owners.
- As stewards of the environment, we should be seeking more effective solutions than establishing carbon taxes and threatening to jail energy company executives.
Economy/Entrepreneurship: NWI is poised to be the "silicon valley" of next generation manufacturing, providing significant opportunities and financial impact to the entire community. Budgets need to be balanced and the national debt should be reduced.
Education: NWI would benefit from greater school choice with options like trade and technology apprenticeships, STEM charter schools and perhaps a Purdue Polytechnic Prep School. Finding innovative solutions to the student loan crisis will be a focus.
Environment/Climate Change: 15,000 years ago NWI lay under a mile deep layer of ice. Climate change is real but implementing a carbon tax is not a solution. The problems confronting the people of NWI and the global population can be solved through a commitment to innovation and investments in research and technology. From shoreline erosion, to industrial discharge and overburdened, carbon spewing highways, NWI requires a proven steward of the environment to lead the way.
