Hello! I’m Michael Travis, better known as Erika Rose a drag entertainer in Key West. Born in Texas and living in several places I finally found home in Key West six years ago. With the recent legislative attacks towards trans’ rights, students’ rights and woman’s’ rights all distracting us from real issues they chose to ignore such as housing availability and cost as well as the decline of our environment I decided to step up to add another voice to Tallahassee .
  • Local government is the most important; they are closer to the people and are more suited to acting on the needs of their area. A state’s government role should be to support local government not limit their power. My goal in office will be to expand home rule and prevent future preemptions.
  • While the noise has calmed down on the Governor’s war on woke there has been plenty of damage done in the last few years. Every student has a right to an unbiased education. Every person has a right to live their true self to the fullest. Every woman has the right to make their own choices with their body.
  • Our beautiful environment brings in $63 billion annually it is our duty to protect it, not just the Everglades (as constitutionally obligated), but also the Florida Coral Reef the third largest in the rule. We also need to do better at treating our water quality, drinkable and swimable.
As state representative I will fight to expand and defend basic human rights to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I will work to defend the voice of the people and work to expand home rule
My hero in life is Robin Williams. “ I don't know how much value I have in this universe, but I do know that I've made a few people happier than they would have been without me, and as long as I know that, I'm as rich as I ever need to be.”
Being available and present to the residents you represent is most important. We may not always agree but there needs to be room for conversation.
Our role is to listen to our residents (even the non-voters) and bring their voices to Tallahassee.
Even if I am not elected into office, as long as one young person who feels they don’t belong sees that a Drag Queen from Key West is fighting for them to live their truth, then I will have made an impact.
Well the first was the Berlin Wall coming down when I was a few months old, no I don’t remember it. The biggest one was the September 11th WTC attack when I was 12 and watched the world come together to support the US. But the most personal happened on June 12 2016 when a lone gunman entered one of my local nightclubs and once again the World came together and we were all gay.
Well when I was 17 I enlisted in the Army reserve.. turns out I was unable to meet the run requirements so never advanced beyond initial entry training. After that I worked on a casino ship.
The international delight commercial with Wayne Brady “Every morning I wake up and reach for my smiley face cup..”
Learning I had HIV. The day after the Supreme Court of the US ruled in favor of Same sex marriage I learned I was living with HIV. While there has been great strides in medication and healthcare there was still a stigma and many of my loved ones started looking at me different. Deep down I was also afraid I would never find another to grow old with.
The multi-faceted housing crisis. Housing availability decreasing due to unregulated vacation rentals. Housing damage due to increasingly devastating hurricanes causing insurance rates to go up. Damage to housing due to sea level rise and flooding. Many of our island communities don’t have the option to sprawl outwards the only option is to build up and lose their small community charm.
Well considering I have about zero political experience I would like to say I’m not walking in the door with the bad habits others may have grabbed along the way.
Our problems will not fix themselves and one person cannot do it all. Only by working together will we be able to tackle the tough challenges of housing affordability, our role in climate change, and the dangerous teacher and medical staff shortages.
If I could be half as brave as Anna Eskamani or Angie Dixon I think I’ll be in good shape. They are never afraid to speak their mind and vote in their stance even if they are the only two voting a certain way.
If I only get one big thing done. I would bring power back to local governments the ability to limit the amount and location of vacation rentals and incentivize homeowners to rent to local long term tenants.
