|Hello! I'm Lesa—pronounced just like Lisa. I was raised by two school teachers who deeply valued education and moved to the district where they taught to give my sister and me the best opportunities. Growing up in a modest two-bedroom home, I witnessed my parents’ struggles firsthand. Like any parent, I want to give my children a better life than I had.
I've proudly called Florida home for over 30 years. I graduated from college and law school here, met my wonderful husband Trent here, and we have raised our four amazing kids here - Grace, Hope, Faith, and Chance. We've started businesses and watched our children thrive in Florida’s public schools and universities.
Today, Florida is at a crossroads, and we, the people, have a choice to make. It's not just about who will represent us in Tallahassee, though that’s incredibly important. We must also decide whether we can come together as a community to care for our fellow Floridians the way we want them to care for us.
The integrity of our representatives should match the integrity we hold for ourselves. This election isn’t just about politics; it’s about what we’ll accept and what we expect from our leaders. We need real representation in Tallahassee, and I’m here to bring that change.
I’m humbly asking for your vote because I’m listening, and I’m ready to fight for all Floridians.
- Responsible Development and the Environment: I will advocate for smart growth policies that balance development with proper infrastructure planning and the preservation of our natural resources. Protecting our environment, particularly addressing local issues like Piney Point and phosphate mining, is critical for the future of Manatee County.
- Reproductive Health: I will fight to protect reproductive rights, ensuring that every woman in Florida has the autonomy to make decisions about her own health without government interference. This issue affects not just women but their family and community as well.
- Education and Opportunity: I believe in fully funding public education, supporting our teachers, and ensuring every student has access to quality education. Education is the foundation for a prosperous community, and I am committed to enhancing our schools and protecting academic freedom. Every child in Florida deserves a quality education regardless of zip code.
>Healthcare Access: We must protect and expand healthcare access, including reproductive rights, we risk deepening inequalities and leaving Florida's families vulnerable.
>Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development: Our planet’s health is at a tipping point. Urgent action is needed to combat climate change, promote renewable energy, and enforce sustainable development practices.
>Education: We must prioritize public education. Immediate investments are critical to providing quality education for all, supporting teachers, and ensuring every child has the opportunity to succeed.
>Social Justice: Equality cannot wait. We must address systemic discrimination and ensure every person is treated with dignity and respect.
I’ve been fortunate to have amazing role models throughout my life. My parents and several teachers played a crucial role during my formative years, instilling in me the values of education, hard work, integrity, and compassion. More recently, I’ve been inspired by Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Michelle Obama, and David Hogg. Justice Ginsburg’s commitment to gender equality influenced my decision to pursue a career in law. Michelle Obama’s resilience exemplifies grace under pressure. Finally, David Hogg’s courageous leadership for gun safety demonstrates that young people are ready to lead us toward a better future, which I strive to support and emulate. While I have taken my children to many rallies over their lifetimes, the March for Our Lives in Washington, D.C. was the first one that they asked me to bring them to.
I would recommend the following:
"The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream" - Book by Barack Obama
"A People’s History of the United States" - Book by Howard Zinn
"We Should All Be Feminists" - Book by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
"Pod Save America" - Podcast by former Obama aides Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, Dan Pfeiffer, and Tommy Vietor
The most important characteristics for an elected official include integrity, honesty, and transparency. Officials should prioritize practical, results-oriented problem-solving that serves the community rather than adhering strictly to partisan agendas. Fiscal responsibility is crucial, ensuring taxpayer dollars are used effectively and efficiently. Independence and the ability to work across the aisle are essential for achieving meaningful results. Additionally, elected officials must demonstrate accountability, empathy, and ethical leadership, with a strong commitment to the public good and clear, consistent communication with all constituents.
As an officeholder, I will strive to embody integrity, honesty, and strong moral principles, consistently acting with transparency and avoiding corruption. I bring a proven track record of competence and relevant experience, along with a pragmatic approach to problem-solving that
prioritizes practical solutions over rigid ideologies. My focus is always on putting the needs of my constituents first and working collaboratively to achieve meaningful results.
Fiscal responsibility is a priority for me, with a commitment to balanced budgets and the responsible use of taxpayer dollars. I will hold myself accountable, ensure transparency in my decision-making, and communicate clearly with the public. I am dedicated to understanding and empathizing with the needs and concerns of everyday people, staying genuinely connected with my constituents. Above all, I am committed to the public good, ethical leadership, and the pursuit of justice, fairness, and equality in all that I do.
I believe the Core Responsibilities of a Florida State House Member are:
1. Legislation: Draft, propose, debate, and vote on state laws, focusing on real solutions that satisfy all interests. Ensure all decisions are principled, factually defensible, and forward-looking.
2. Representation: Advocate for the interests of their district and assist constituents with state-related issues, always considering the long-term future and the best
interests of our children and grandchildren.
3. Budgeting: Participate in the state’s budgeting process to ensure responsible allocation of taxpayer funds.
4. Constituent Engagement and Education: Maintain regular communication with constituents, educate them about new laws and state programs, and encourage civic engagement.
5. Committee Work: Serve on committees to review legislation and focus on specific policy areas.
6. Oversight: Monitor the executive branch and state agencies to ensure laws are implemented correctly.
In the end, I want to be remembered as a leader who listened, who cared deeply about the people I served, and who had the courage to make difficult decisions for the greater good, even when it wasn’t the easiest or most popular path. My commitment extends beyond just serving the present; I am dedicated to leaving our planet and our lives better than we found them. I strive to ensure that the choices I make today will lead to a brighter, more sustainable future for all of our children, grandchildren, and generations to come.
The first historical event that happened in my lifetime that I remember was when President Nixon resigned in 1974. I was nearly 6 years old and did not understand the significance of the event, I just witnessed the adults gathering around the television in shock.
The first historical even that happened in my lifetimes that I remember and understood was the falling of the Berlin Wall in Germany. I was 20 years old and in college studying political science. The fall of the Berlin Wall symbolized the end of the Cold War and the beginning of the reunification of East and West Germany.
My very first job was at a local dry cleaner in Williamsville, NY when I was 15 years old. I didn't stay there long since my friends worked at the mall and that seemed a lot more fun.
"The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream" by Barack Obama
Hope. This book appeals to a wide audience, focusing on hope, unity, and practical solutions to America’s challenges. Obama’s ability to inspire makes me believe we can ultimately all come together as Americans.
Atticus Finch from "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee
Atticus Finch is a symbol of moral integrity and fairness, who stands up for what is right, even when it’s unpopular. His commitment to justice and doing what’s right, regardless of public opinion, is a trait to be admired.
“Someone You Loved” by Lewis Capaldi
The ideal relationship between the Florida state legislature and the governor should be collaborative, with both branches working together to serve the public good while maintaining a strong system of checks and balances. This relationship should prioritize transparency, accountability, and a commitment to policies that benefit all Floridians. Currently, there is a need to reduce partisanship and enhance legislative oversight to ensure that the voices of all residents are
heard and respected in the decision-making process.
Florida's greatest challenges over the next decade include addressing climate change and protecting our environment, ensuring economic stability and growth, and tackling social and economic inequality. Voters also emphasize the need for government accountability, effective governance, and protecting voting rights. Together, these priorities reflect a commitment to
creating a more sustainable, equitable, and prosperous future for all Floridians.
While previous experience in government or politics can be valuable, I believe that not having that
experience can actually be an advantage, especially in today’s climate. As a woman who has navigated challenges and achieved success in other fields, I bring a fresh perspective and a strong commitment to serving the people of our district without being tied to the old ways of doing things.
My background allows me to approach issues with a clear, unfiltered lens, driven by common sense and a desire for real, practical solutions that benefit our community. I understand the concerns and aspirations of everyday Floridians because I’ve lived them, and I’m not beholden to special interests or entrenched political norms. This independence empowers me to focus solely on what’s best for our district and to bring new energy, ideas, and a collaborative spirit to the state
legislature.
In many ways, my lack of traditional political experience is my greatest strength. It means I’m coming into this role with an open mind, ready to listen, learn, and lead with integrity and the determination to make a real difference.
Absolutely, building relationships with other legislators is crucial. Women, in particular, bring unique strengths to this process—such as collaboration, empathy, and strong communication skills—that are essential for effective legislating. By fostering respectful, cooperative relationships, we can find common ground, create inclusive solutions, and work together to achieve real
progress for our communities.
Three come immediately to mind:
1. Community Strength After Hurricane Debby
>When Hurricane Debby hit in 2024, it brought widespread flooding and damage to Manatee County. In the aftermath, the community came together with extraordinary solidarity. Neighbors helped each other rebuild homes, clear debris, and restore hope. The response to Hurricane Debby reflects the unbreakable spirit of the residents, showing that even in the face of adversity, the community’s strength shines through.
2. The Resilience of Cortez Fishing Village
>The Cortez Fishing Village is one of the last working fishing communities in Florida. Despite pressures from environmental changes and development, the villagers have fiercely preserved their way of life, continuing sustainable fishing practices that have been passed down for generations. Their story is a testament to the strength and resilience of this historic community.
3. Hope Family Services Center: A Beacon of Safety
>The Hope Family Services Center in Manatee County has provided crucial support to survivors of domestic violence. Through the center’s compassionate services,
countless individuals have found safety, empowerment, and a chance to rebuild their lives. The personal stories of those who have been helped highlight the life-changing impact of community support and the importance of resources for those in need.
I went to a restaurant that serves 'breakfast at any time.' So I ordered French Toast during the Renaissance. - Steven Wright
The legislature should absolutely play a critical role in overseeing the use of emergency powers. While it’s essential for a governor to have the ability to act swiftly in true emergencies, there must be strong checks and balances to ensure that these powers are used appropriately and do not overstep or become prolonged unnecessarily. The legislature, representing the voice of the people, should be involved in granting and reviewing these powers to protect against potential overreach and to ensure that all actions are in the best interest of the public. It’s about maintaining
accountability and transparency while ensuring our government can respond effectively in times of crisis.
Quality Education for All Act
>This legislation would allocate additional funds to increase teacher salaries and reduce class sizes in public schools across Manatee County and the state of Florida. By ensuring competitive pay, the bill aims to attract and retain high-quality educators, while smaller
class sizes would allow for more personalized instruction and better student outcomes. The goal is to strengthen the education system, provide equitable learning opportunities, demonstrate the value of our teachers and invest in the future of Florida’s children.
Our campaign is just beginning in earnest, and we are actively seeking endorsements to build a broad base of support. While we are still in the early stages, we are reaching out to key organizations and community leaders who align with our As endorsements are confirmed, we will proudly share them as part of our growing coalition.

I strongly believe that financial transparency and government accountability are essential pillars of
a healthy democracy. Citizens have the right to know how their tax dollars are being spent and to trust that their elected officials are acting in the public’s best interest, not for personal gain or the benefit of special interests.
To ensure this, I support robust measures to increase transparency, such as requiring detailed public disclosures of government spending, implementing strict anti-corruption laws, and establishing independent oversight bodies to hold all levels of government accountable.
By making government operations more transparent and accountable, we can build trust between
the government and the people, ensure that resources are used efficiently, and create policies that
truly reflect the needs and desires of all Floridians, regardless of political affiliation. This commitment to transparency and accountability is key to creating a government that works fairly for everyone.
As a candidate for the State House, I believe that the ballot initiative process is a crucial part of our democracy. It gives Floridians the power to directly shape the laws and policies that impact our lives, ensuring that the voice of the people is heard loud and clear.
I support keeping this process accessible and fair so that citizens can continue to bring forward the issues that matter most to them. Unfortunately, there have been efforts to make it more difficult for initiatives to reach the ballot, whether by increasing the number of signatures required or shortening the time to gather them. I’m concerned that these changes could limit the ability of everyday Floridians to participate in our democracy, especially those from grassroots movements.
I’m committed to protecting the rights of all Floridians to have a direct say in our state’s future, and I will oppose any attempts to make it harder for you to use this important democratic tool. Together, we can ensure that the ballot initiative process remains a powerful way for all of us - regardless of party affiliation - to make our voices heard.
