The Treasurer of the State of Kansas is the chief financial officer of the government of Kansas. The treasurer is publicly elected in midterm election years. The treasurer is responsible for maintaining the state funds and acting as the state's bank.[1]
Current officeholder
The current Kansas Treasurer is Steven C. Johnson (R). Johnson assumed office in 2023.
Authority
Originally, the state treasurer of Kansas was a constitutional office. In 1979, however, the office became statutorily defined following a constitutional amendment. The position is defined in Chapter 25, Article 1 of the Kansas Code.
Article 1, Section 1b:
At the general election held in 1978 and each four (4) years thereafter, there shall be elected a treasurer for the state of Kansas,...[2] |

Elections
The state treasurer is elected to serve for a term of four years of length, which runs concurrently with the term of the governor. The election is held in November and the statewide official takes office the following January.[3]

Duties
According to the official website, the treasurer "ensures safe and efficient operation of state government through effective banking, investment, and cash management. In short, the State Treasurer is the Chief Banker of the State." The treasurer is also a board trustee of the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System, a member of the Pooled Money Investment Board, and a member of the Committee on Surety Bonds and Insurance.[1]
