Joe Miller (b. May 10, 1967, in Osborne, Kansas) was a 2016 Libertarian candidate who sought election to the U.S. Senate from Alaska.[1]
Miller was a 2014 Republican candidate who sought election to the U.S. Senate from Alaska.[2] He was defeated by Daniel S. Sullivan in the Republican primary on August 19, 2014.[3]
In 2010, he defeated incumbent Lisa Murkowski (R) in the primary election for U.S. Senate. However, she then ran in the general election as a write-in candidate and defeated Miller.[4]
Biography
Miller graduated from West Point in 1989. He then served as an armor officer with the 1st Infantry Division in Desert Storm. Miller then earned his J.D. from Yale Law School and his master's degree in economics from the University of Alaska. At age 30, he was appointed as a State Magistrate. Four years later he was appointed an Acting State District Court Judge and U.S. Magistrate Judge in Fairbanks.[4]

Heading into the election, Ballotpedia rated Alaska's U.S. Senate race as safely Republican. Incumbent Lisa Murkowski defeated Ray Metcalfe (D), Joe Miller (L), Breck Craig (I), Ted Gianoutsos (I), and Margaret Stock (I) in the general election on November 8, 2016. Murkowski defeated Paul Kendall, Thomas Lamb, and Bob Lochner in the Republican primary, while Metcalfe defeated Edgar Blatchford to win the Democratic nomination. The primary elections took place on August 16, 2016.[5][6]

- Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who said in his endorsement statement, "Joe Miller is a true constitutional conservative with a vision to protect our borders and restore America".[8]
- Miller received the endorsements of two of the most prominent groups which advocate for Second Amendment rights, The Gun Owners of America’s Political Victory Fund and the National Association for Gun Rights PAC.[9]

Miller ran for election to the U.S. Senate in 2010. He challenged and defeated incumbent Lisa Murkowski in the Republican primary. However, Murkowski defeated him in the general election as a write-in candidate.
