Hasan Harnett is a former chair of the Republican Party of North Carolina. He is the founder of Success Mastery Leadership LLC, an organization that offers tools to promote personal and professional leadership development.

Career

Harnett earned a B.A. in biochemistry from Lafayette College in 1998. Following graduation, he attended the Tuck Business Bridge Program at Dartmouth College and received an executive education certificate. Harnett worked in finance, venture capital, real estate, and executive recruitment before moving to Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2005 to work for U.S. Bank as a financial analyst.[1][2]

In 2011, Harnett founded Success Mastery Leadership LLC, an organization that aims to enable "positive, progressive, and energetically-motivated leaders become extraordinary in their leadership." Through the organization, Harnett works as a motivational speaker, writer, and teacher to help businesses and individuals realize personal and professional achievement.[2]

Harnett was a registered Democrat until he switched to the Republican Party in 2010. He assisted Republican Christopher Hailey in his 2010 race for sheriff in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, and began working with the Republican Party of North Carolina (NCGOP) to improve minority outreach. Harnett was selected as a fellow with the North Carolina Institute of Political Leadership in 2011 and earned a certificate in political leadership in 2012. He went on to work as campaign manager during Vince Coakley's 2014 bid for North Carolina's 12th Congressional District.[1][2][3]

Republican Party of North Carolina

Harnett was elected chair of the Republican Party of North Carolina (NCGOP) in June 2015. He defeated Craig Collins, the candidate favored by Governor of North Carolina Pat McCrory and Republican leaders in the state. Harnett's campaign platform focused on local party development and grassroots engagement. As the NCGOP's first black chairman, Harnett aimed to improve the party's minority outreach.[1]

In March 2016, the NCGOP state central committee passed a no-confidence vote pertaining to Harnett's chairmanship. The committee accused Harnett of eight infractions of party rules, limited his duties, and prohibited his access to NCGOP headquarters. State committee members claimed that Harnett tampered with the NCGOP website in an effort to single-handedly lower the ticket price for the state convention, contrary to the admission price determined by the executive and central committees. Other accusations included alleged inaccurate and vindictive statements made by Harnett in reference to NCGOP staff and party members. "Recent accusations of me hacking into the NC GOP website are false and ridiculous,” Harnett responded. “These types of ‘witch hunts’ will not only devastate our Republican Candidates’ chances of winning in November but will utterly annihilate the Republican Party we all work so hard to build in North Carolina.”[4][5]

The NCGOP executive committee voted to remove Harnett from the chairmanship on April 30, 2016. He was replaced with former NCGOP chair Robin Hayes.[6]
