Giles Rich

Giles Sutherland Rich was a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the United States Court of Customs and Patent Appeals. Rich was the oldest serving active judge, remaining on the court until his death in 1999 at the age of 95.[1] Rich died on June 9, 1999.

Federal judicial service

Rich was nominated to the Court of Customs and Patent Appeals by President Dwight Eisenhower. He was commissioned on July 19, 1956. He was reassigned to the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit when the Court of Customs and Patent Appeals was abolished, receiving his commission on October 1, 1982. His service was terminated on June 9, 1999 due to his death.[2][3]

Education

Rich earned his B.S. from Harvard College in 1926. He went on to receive his LLB from Columbia Law School in 1929.[2]

Professional career

Rich worked in private practice in New York City from 1929 to 1956. He was also a lecturer at Columbia University from 1942 to 1956. He then worked as Adjunct Professor for Georgetown University from 1963 to 1969.[2]
