I am the proud parent of two LCPS elementary school students. I have lived and been an active volunteer in Loudoun since 2014. I am a former prosecutor and career government safety attorney. I grew up in a rural, poor community in the Midwest and attended K-12 public schools. I know from experience the power that a great public education has to open doors and change people's lives -- it gives students the opportunity to succeed, to support themselves and their families, and give back to their communities.
  • All students and staff, regardless of background, need to be welcome, safe, and included in our LCPS community.
  • Our educators need to be supported, appreciated, and respected.
  • Our School Board needs to hear the concerns from our community, engage in respectful and civil discourse, and make evidence-based decisions focused on the best interests of our students.
Public safety, accountability, and combatting discrimination.
Elected officials need to possess integrity and humility. They must always remember that it is a privilege to serve the public, and that their obligation to make decisions to benefit their community rather than themselves. Part of having integrity means being as transparent as possible with the community, being responsive, and admitting when you have made a mistake.
There are several reasons I believe I will be a successful officeholder. First, I am running for this position because of my dedication to true public service, not because I am trying to obtain benefits for myself or set myself up to run for a different position in the future. Further, due to my training as an attorney, I have extensive experience considering many possible solutions to a situation and dispassionately evaluating pros and cons of each. I also have experience building consensus among groups with divergent interests in furtherance of a common goal. I have worked with people who have different political viewpoints, and have worked under both Republican and Democratic leaders, so I am accustomed to setting aside political disagreements in order to get a job done.
I remember when I was seven years old watching the Challenger Shuttle explosion on the news.
My very first job was trimming grapes in a local vineyard during the summers. I worked there during summer months for a few years during high school and college.
"Ruby Tuesday" by the Rolling Stones. My family recently adopted a pair of four-month-old kittens, whom we named Trixie and Ruby. When a friend and her daugther came over to meet them, the friend told my daughter there is a famous song about Ruby, and since then I can't get it out of my head!
The job of every School Board member is to make sure we are providing the best possible education to the students of Loudoun County. In order to do this, Board members must make important policy decisions, set clear expectations for the Superintendent, model support for educators, and rebuild relationships between Loudoun families and LCPS.
My constituents are everyone who lives and works in Loudoun County, whether or not they are eligible to vote. The health of our public schools affects the health and stability of our entire community. While parents, students, and educators are the biggest stakeholders, the decisions the School Board makes about LCPS impact beyond the school district.
The mental health of our students and educators is of utmost importance. Schools should provide to students and educators, and make available to parents and families, information and instruction on how to recognize indicators that they or someone they know might be struggling with mental health challenges. Such instruction should also include teaching students and educators when and how to intervene, how to seek help and support from others, and destigmatizing the conversation around mental health challenges. Schools should increase the number of counselors available and ensure that students and educators know that resource is available and how they can help. Peer mentoring and counseling for both students and educators should also be encouraged.
