Six statewide ballot measures were certified for 2014 ballots in the state of Alabama, including one legislatively referred constitutional amendment on the July 15, 2014 primary ballot and three on the November 4, 2014 general election ballot.

The primary runoff ballot measure, Amendment 1, was approved. Of the five legislatively referred constitutional amendments that appeared on the general election ballot, all five were approved.


The state does not allow initiatives or referendums, therefore, all measures were referred by the Alabama Legislature. The 2014 regular legislative session began on January 14, 2014 and convened on April 3, 2014.[1]

Historical facts

  • Between 1996 and 2013, an average of six measures appeared annually on the ballot in Alabama. Therefore, 2014 was a below-average year, based on the number of certified measures.
  • From 1996 to 2014, the number of measures on statewide ballots ranged from one to 14.
  • Between 1996 and 2014, 48 of 80, or 60 percent, of Alabama ballot measures were approved by voters.
  • Conversely, 31 of 80, or 40 percent, of measures were defeated.
