"My earthbending master, Sud, was uncompromising, stubborn, and blunt ... and a life-long friend." |
— Roku talking about his earthbending master.[1] |
Sud was Avatar Roku's earthbending teacher who taught him the bending art when he was in the process of mastering the four elements.
History[]
Sud was a citizen of the Earth Kingdom when Roku was a young man. He was a skilled and powerful earthbending master given the honor of teaching the Avatar earthbending, the last element Roku needed to master in order to become a fully realized Avatar. Roku described him as being "uncompromising, stubborn, and blunt", which are all qualities that define earthbenders.
Once his training was completed, Roku beat his teacher in a race up a mountain by surfing on rocks. Sud seemingly pulled ahead at first; however, when he reached the top of the hill, he was shocked to see Roku already sitting there, brewing a pot of tea and offering him a cup. Sud laughed and they sat down to enjoy the hot beverage. Sud and Roku remained good and life-long friends after the latter journeyed back to the Fire Nation in order to master the Avatar State.[1]
After Roku became a fully realized Avatar, Sud was summoned to instruct Earth King Jialun in advanced earthbending techniques. Through the months he spent at the Earth Kingdom Royal Palace, Sud determined that Jialun was not ignorant as he pretended to be, and began to worry about what nefarious plans the Earth King had for the nation. He was unable to act upon these worries, however, having no experience or ability with politics.[2]
Personality[]
Sud had a blunt and straightforward attitude. He was famed throughout the Earth Kingdom for his honesty and grit. It was said that there was no stronger believer in the Earth Kingdom and what it represented than Sud, who was convinced that Earth Kingdom citizens could hammer out the issues there were with their great nation and forge a brighter future.[2]
Abilities[]
Sud was renowned as one of the greatest earthbending masters of his time, leading him to become the teacher of the Avatar. Sud's success with Roku led to the Earth King requesting his instruction in advanced earthbending techniques. However, Sud had virtually no ability with politics at the royal palace.[2]

Trivia[]
- When translated from French or Italian, "Sud" means "south"; to be "south" is to be resistant to change or to be stubborn with new ideology, which are two of the main principles involved in earthbending and aspects of Sud's personality. This also makes him a counterpart to Toph, as her last name, Beifong, means "north".
- Sud did not seem to have the typical green eyes that many other earthbenders have.
