"Before she died, Avatar Kyoshi trained an elite force in her image. One ready to protect not only our homes but our way of life. That tradition has been passed down through the generations, and it is now my honour to protect this community and to uphold the values of the Avatar. That is why I am not just a warrior. I'm a Kyoshi Warrior."

Overview[]

Aang, Katara, and Sokka arrive at a small island, home to elite warriors named after Avatar Kyoshi. The Fire Nation gets wind of the Avatar's whereabouts.

Synopsis[]

Aang browses Zuko notebook and decides to go to Kyoshi Island to see if he can learn more about his Avatar State. Katara notices a waterbending scroll that Gran Gran packed to help her with her training. Aang, Katara and Sokka travel atop Appa to the island where they visit the statue of Kyoshi, one of Aang's past lives. At the statue, the Kyoshi warriors ambush the gang, capturing them. As this happens, the Kyoshi's statue shines a light on Aang, proving to be a sign of his avatarhood. Thus, they let the team go.

Meanwhile, Zuko, angered at losing his notebook, goes with Iroh to a nearby village. There, Iroh convinces Zuko to approach locally stationed Fire Navy Commander, Zhao, and ask him for his reports about disturbances in the area. This allowed them to request information leading to Aang's location without telling Zhao they had found the Avatar. However, one of Zuko's crew lets slip to Zhao's subordinate Lieutenant Dang that Zuko had the Avatar but lost him. Zhao, hearing reports about a "flying cow" near Kyoshi Island, sets off to capture the Avatar. Zuko and Iroh soon notice that Zhao's ship is missing and race to follow him.

Katara goes to the nearest river and begins practicing the waterbending moves depicted on the scroll. She offers to teach Aang, but he refuses, haunted that training would bring up memories of his former teacher Gyatso. Reading through the information on Kyoshi, Aang struggles to find anything of note, to which Katara reminds him that as Kyoshi is one of Aang's past lives, he can communicate with Kyoshi. Aang goes to Kyoshi's statue and enters the Avatar State and meets with Kyoshi.

In the village, Suki, a Kyoshi Warrior, notices Sokka practicing with his boomerang and shows him how to properly fight and position himself in a battle, telling him that as non-benders they have to fight from the heart. Throughout Sokka's training, the two become close and nearly kiss but are interrupted when they heard the bell, alerting them that the Fire Nation has arrived. Zhao's forces begin to engage with the Kyoshi warriors, while Zuko's squad travels to Kyoshi statue to get Aang.

Katara attempts to hold Zuko off using the her recently learned waterbending moves she's been practicing but loses. Sokka uses Suki's fighting style, along with the Kyoshi Warriors, against the Fire Nation troops, but eventually overpowered.

Meanwhile, Aang was transported into the spirit world where he asks Kyoshi for help in mastering the Avatar State. Kyoshi proceeds to give Aang advice on the power, and consequences, of the Avatar State. She then shows Aang a vision of the future in which the Northern Water Tribe was attacked by the Fire Nation, and as such he had to stop the genocide of another race of benders, like the Air Nomads. Following this, Kyoshi senses the village being attacked by the Fire Nation, and manifestes herself through Aang to fight off the assembled soldiers in the Avatar State. Once the invaders retreated, Kyoshi disappeared, leaving Aang in her place.

The village thanks Aang and encourages the gang to move forward. Sokka pulls Suki aside, where they share there first kiss, and Suki leaves him with a fan. As they leave the entire village waves them goodbye. Atop appa Aang discuss his talk with Kyoshi and their next move.
