Guo Xun was the Queen of Omashu during the youth of Avatar Roku.

History[]

Early life and involvement with the Western Kingdom Trading Company[]

Guo Xun was born during the later life of Avatar Kyoshi. As a child, she idolized the Avatar, who supported Guo Xun's family taking the throne with the sacred duty to protect Omashu. When she became queen, she wholeheartedly embraced the political structure the Avatar had helped create.[1]

During her rule, the Western Kingdom Trading Company was an influential force in Omashu. Eventually, the company requested permission to explore a remote Fire Island as ancient texts indicated that the location harbored a source of great power. Guo Xun denied the request, as the Fire Island was within Fire Nation territory and she wanted to avoid an international conflict. However, company researchers Yuming and Qixia disobeyed the monarch and ventured to Lambak Island in 66 BG, indeed becoming embroiled in a violent dispute that even involved Avatar Roku.[3]

The researchers and their mercenaries were subsequently returned to Omashu to stand trial. When the company members shared their discovery of a special, spirit-infused metal with Guo Xun, however, the queen spared them from punishment. Prince Sozin of the Fire Nation began to grow concerned that Guo Xun had learned that Lambak Island's special ore could be used as a flux for making very high-quality steel. Sozin tried to spy on Omashu's queen through Ta Min, a new Fire Nation emissary that he sent as a diplomat, though the noblewoman proved to be an unreliable agent.[4]

Conflict with Jialun[]

Around a decade later, Guo Xun was best known for her deep rivalry with Earth King Jialun. She found most of his actions to be cheap and selfish, thinking him insecure in his power for weakening the standing of those who had nothing to begin with, such as the Earth Sages. By the time of the coronation of Sozin as Fire Lord, Guo Xun was a graceful and elderly woman who worked as a balancing force to the machinations of the Earth King. She embroiled her city and its diplomats in just enough conflict to not spark an all-out war with Ba Sing Se.[1] Both monarchs had spies in each other's courts, and both throne rooms were vipers' nests.[5]

Personality[]

Guo Xun was considered a graceful and benevolent queen of Omashu.[1]

Abilities[]

Guo Xun was a brilliant political strategist and could help sharpen the keenest of minds. She was likely to contact those opposed to the schemes of Earth King Jialun, asking them to spy for her or to smuggle technologies for her scholars undetected in the Earth Kingdom.[1]
