Chidaw was a merchant and soldier of Southern Water Tribe descent who rose to become the leader of Jasmine Island's protectors in the early 3rd century BG. He led the island's defenses during a large Fifth Nation pirate raid.
History[]
As a member of the traditional community of Southern Water Tribe merchants on Jasmine Island, Chidaw was born into a life of business. Over time, he became successful and respected enough to be selected as the Southern traders' overall leader on the island. In this position, Chidaw also became a member of the Jasmine Island protectors, as the merchant community had historically led the local defense efforts.[1]
Chidaw soon realized that he greatly enjoyed his service among the protectors, and –upon rising to become the militia's leader– he devoted an unusual amount of energy to his office's duties. He started to view this position as his "destiny", and began to contemplate passing his family business to his daughter so he could devote his entire time to the protectors.[1] Chidaw also attempted to recruit more people into the protectors' ranks. Among others, he enlisted Mirlon,[2] Ara, Joh, Fu Karaq, Revik, and Yarru.[3][4]
In the 290s BG, a Fifth Nation splinter fleet led by Tagaka, an infamous pirate queen, attacked Jasmine Island. Much to Chidaw's shock and horror, the pirates were aided by Mirlon who had betrayed his home for a large sum of money. Upon learning of this, Chidaw felt deeply guilty and became reckless during the fighting against the pirates to assuage his fury.[2] Ultimately, the Fifth Nation raid was defeated thanks to the efforts of the protectors and the aid of a small force of Fire Nationals led by Hei-Ran.[5]
Personality[]
After becoming leader of the Jasmine Island protectors, Chidaw became extremely devoted to his duties and saw it as his responsibility to keep all Jasmine Islanders safe.[1]

Chidaw was a skilled trader and warrior.[1] As a waterbender, he knew how to skillfully use water tendrils to grab and incapacitate his opponents.[1][6]
