Avatar Legends is the name of a multimedia franchise created by Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino, and owned by Paramount Global. The franchise originally started as a single show, Avatar: The Last Airbender, but has gone on to comprise numerous other works, including the sequel show The Legend of Korra, as well as comics, novels, games, and numerous upcoming projects from Avatar Studios.
Although the Avatar Legends trademark was only first applied to releases from 2021 onward, the term is still used retroactively.[1]
Avatar Legends is set in a majestic fantasy world inspired by Asian and the indigenous peoples of the Americas' cultures. In the world of Avatar Legends, there are four traditional nations, each of which are characterized by a certain element: water, earth, fire, and air. The overall setting is often referred to as the Avatarverse.[1] The majority of mainline Avatar Legends stories center the eponymous Avatar - a part-spirit human being who is the only person who can master all four elements, and whose duty it is to use their power to maintain balance and peace across the world.

Avatar: The Last Airbender[]

Avatar: The Last Airbender started the entire Avatar Legends franchise. The series follows the adventures of Avatar Aang, who must save the world by defeating Fire Lord Ozai and ending the destructive war with the Fire Nation. The show first aired on February 21, 2005, and concluded with the series finale on July 19, 2008.
Avatar: The Last Airbender was popular with both audiences and critics, garnering 5.6 million viewers on its best-rated showing and receiving high ratings in the Nicktoons lineup, even outside its 6–11-year-old demographic. Avatar has been nominated for and won awards from the Annual Annie Awards, the Genesis Awards, and the primetime Emmy Awards, among others. The first season's success prompted Nickelodeon to order second and third seasons. The success of Avatar: The Last Airbender would lead to other works in the Avatar Legends franchise being ordered.
The Legend of Korra[]

The Legend of Korra was the second show in the Avatar Legends franchise, serving as a sequel series to Avatar: The Last Airbender. The series picks up seventy years after the end of Avatar: The Last Airbender story arc with brand new characters and settings. The protagonist of the series is Avatar Korra, Aang's successor, a hot-headed and rebellious woman from the Southern Water Tribe who is ready to take on the world. The series follows Korra as she faces the difficult challenges, duties, and responsibilities that come with being the Avatar. The series ran for fifty-two episodes, premiering on April 14, 2012, with the series finale airing on December 19, 2014.
The Legend of Korra was also very successful, with the first season having the highest total for an animated series in 2012, with the series winning both a Daytime Emmy Award and an Annie Award. Following the completion of The Legend of Korra, a graphic novel sequel series began to continue the story. No other Avatar Legends series aired in the 2010s, until Avatar Studios was announced by Paramount in 2021.

Three chibi-style animated shorts were included as DVD extras to Avatar: The Last Airbender. They all have a humorous and tongue-in-cheek tone. The three shorts are Bending Battle, Swamp Skiin' Throwdown, and School Time Shipping. All are considered non-canonical.
Republic City Hustle[]

Republic City Hustle is a web series, serving as a prequel to The Legend of Korra. It explores the history of Mako and Bolin, later members of Korra's Team Avatar, after they find themselves orphaned after the deaths of their parents, and are living on the street. A trilogy of short episodes were released for the series between August 9, 2013, and August 23, 2013.

Chronicles of the Avatar[]

Chronicles of the Avatar is a series of novels and is part of the Avatar Legends franchise. With the continued success of the Avatar franchise, The Rise of Kyoshi was published on July 16, 2019, serving as the origin story of the legendary Avatar Kyoshi, who first appeared in Avatar: The Last Airbender and became a fan favorite character. A sequel book, The Shadow of Kyoshi was published on July 21, 2020, and completed the storyline from the previous novel.
A third book, The Dawn of Yangchen, was published on July 19, 2022, focused on the life of Avatar Yangchen.[2] A fourth book, The Legacy of Yangchen was published on July 18, 2023 and serves as a sequel to the previous novel.[3][4]
A fifth novel, The Reckoning of Roku, was published on July 23, 2024, being the first of the series to be written by Randy Ribay.[5] The sixth novel, The Awakening of Roku, will be released on October 14, 2025.[6]
Avatar Legends novels[]
Avatar Legends is an upcoming series of novels which will begin in July 22, 2025 with City of Echoes, a book that focuses on the life of Jin during the Hundred Year War. It is written by Judy I. Lin.[7]

The Legend of Korra (video game)[]

The Legend of Korra is a video game designed for multiple platforms, based on the series of the same name. It is an original canonical story that takes place between the second and third seasons of The Legend of Korra, with the storyline focusing on Korra having to defeat Hundun, an ancient enemy of the Avatar, who seeks to bring chaos to the world. The game released on Steam and the PlayStation Network on October 21, 2014, and on Xbox Live the following day. Three years after its release, the game was removed from online stores.
Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game[]

Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game is a tabletop roleplaying game developed by Magpie Games, using the Powered by the Apocalypse system. Notably, this was the first piece of media to officially use the Avatar Legends brand. The game details how to play a campaign in the four nations. Its Quickstart was released free of charge on July 12, 2021. Its core book was released digitally in batches beginning on February 24, 2022, containing information on how to play four eras (the Eras of Kyoshi, Roku, the Hundred Year War, Aang, and Korra). Notably, the game's core book features extensive new information about the history and setting of the world of Avatar Legends, with the most extensive new information covering detailing the life of Avatar Roku. Supplement books include Wan Shi Tong's Adventure Guide, Republic City, and The Spirit World.
Untitled action-RPG game[]

An Avatar action-RPG game for PC and consoles is currently being developed by Paramount Game Studios and Saber Interactive.[8] It has the working title "Ice Wars" and will be set in the Avatar Legends continuity, at the onset of a volcanic ice age around 7,000 BG.[9] Players will control a new Avatar and engage in "dynamic combat alongside companions" as well as "experience the challenges and decisions that come with being the keeper of balance in the world".[8]
