Avatar Studios is a production company launched by Nickelodeon and Paramount Global on February 24, 2021, with Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino serving as co-chief creative officers.[1] The studio will produce brand-new material set in the Avatar universe, including new series, short-form content, spin-offs, and theatrical films;[2][3] the creators have stated they believe the studio gives them the freedom and support to make any potential Avatar project they can think of.[4]
According to DiMartino and Konietzko, they have a multi-tiered plan for the future of the Avatar series. The projects will expand upon the largely unexplored past, as well as the future of the world of Avatar. Each project will "feel like Avatar", but will have its own unique tone and look.[4] They have also stated that there is no plan to work on adaptations of Avatar comics or books.[5] Avatar Studios content will be expanding on ancillary book canon.[5]
Currently, Avatar Studios is working on four new television series and three new animated theatrical films.[6][7][8] The three films will be made in an original hybrid 2D and computer-generated (CG) style, and in collaboration with Flying Bark Productions.[9][10] DiMartino and Konietzko have looked into hybrid styles of 2D-3D, although this idea was discarded, as well as pure 3D animation.[5] It was reported that concept art for the first film was shown at the Annecy International Film Animation Festival, showing a shot of a walled city with a giant tower (later clarified to resemble General Fong's fortress) with the caption "The Avatar Returns" and the elemental symbol for earth.[11][12]
The first project from Avatar Studios will be a movie focusing on AvatarAang and his friends[8][16] in their young adulthood,[17] under the working title "Aang: The Last Airbender".[18] Directed by Lauren Montgomery and produced in collaboration with Nickelodeon Animation and Paramount Animation, the film was set to start production in late 2021[3] for release on October 10, 2025,[19] but this release date was later pushed back to January 30, 2026.[20]
In late 2023, Jessica Matten was confirmed to have been cast as Katara in the film via the official website of her production company 7 Forward Entertainment.[21] At CinemaCon in April 2024, Dave Bautista, Eric Nam, Dionne Quan, and Román Zaragoza were revealed to be part of the voice cast for the film.[18] Eric Nam later confirmed that he would be the voice of Aang,[22] while the official Avatar: The Last Airbender Instagram account confirmed fan reports from the event that Dave Bautista had been cast as the villain and Dionne Quan had been cast as Toph.[23]
