East 7th Street Mexican restaurant, bar, and unofficial soccer-viewing headquarters Takoba is reopening on Thursday, June 14 on 1411 East 7th Street, just in time for the beginning of the World Cup 2018. The first game airs at 10 a.m. Central Standard Time between Russia and Saudi Arabia.

The restaurant, known for its margaritas, tacos, and alfresco space, closed without any warning in January 2018, citing that it wanted to renovate the restaurant space as well as revamp the food and drink menus. Those changes include an updated front dining room, but nothing further was revealed.

Update, June 11: Takoba cautions that its renovations aren’t finished, but it decided to temporarily open for the World Cup period anyway. This means there will be a limited menu.

During Takoba’s off-period, owner Jose De Loera opened a third fourth location of his taco drive-thru El Tacorrido out in Brentwood on 5303 Burnet Road. There are El Tacorridos on South First, Berkman Drive, and North Lamar Boulevard too.

De Loera opened Takoba in 2010 and expanded with mezcal bar Cantina El Milamores in 2013.
