Takoba, the East 7th Street Mexican restaurant and bar, closed suddenly this week. However, the Facebook post announcement notes that it is “indefinitely,” because it will renovate the space as well as revamp the menus. Its last day was Thursday, January 18. Read the full note below.

It isn’t clear how long the shutter will last, nor what exactly those changes will entail. Eater has reached out for more information; watch this space for updates.

Update, February 9: Takoba is set to reopen sometime at the end of May, just in time for the World Cup. A manager told Eater that they “plan on giving the front dining room a makeover along with some menu changes,” but wouldn’t expand any further than that.

Owner Jose De Loera opened Takoba in 2010. The restaurant was known for its margaritas, tacos, and the large patio. The restaurant was a soccer haven as well, often airing major games. Takoba expanded with mezcal bar Cantina el Milamores in 2013, which is found right next to the restaurant

De Loera also runs taco drive-thru El Tacorrido, which currently has three locations.

Similarly, South Lamar deli and market Delicious closed last summer, noting that it was temporary as well, but nothing has happened with the space since.

Takoba’s Facebook Post

We regret to inform you that effective Thursday January 18, 2018, Takoba will be closing indefinitely. We will be using this time to improve our food and drink menus as well as giving the restaurant a makeover. We want to thank everyone for making Takoba such a fun place all these years. We’ll see you’ll very soon!!!
