『終戦のエンペラー』

【ロサンゼルス共同】終戦直後の日本を舞台に、昭和天皇の戦争責任をどう捉えるべきか、占領政策を担った連合国軍総司令部（ＧＨＱ）当局者らが明らかにしようとする様子を描いた米映画「終戦のエンペラー」が８日、全米で公開される。米国の日本関係者の間では大きな関心を集めており、７月から上映予定の日本でも話題となりそうだ。

記事中の写真のキャプションに「ゲイリー・フォスター」という人名があるのを手がかりに Internet Movie Database で検索してみた結果、Emperor という原題の映画がヒットしました（フォスター氏はプロデューサーの一人としてクレジットされている）。マッカーサー役にトミー・リー・ジョーンズ。あらすじは……

A story of love and understanding set amidst the tensions and uncertainties of the days immediately following the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II. On the staff of General Douglas MacArthur (Jones), the de facto ruler of Japan as Supreme Commander of the occupying forces, a leading Japanese expert, General Bonner Fellers (Fox) is charged with reaching a decision of historical importance: should Emperor Hirohito be tried and hanged as a war criminal? 東京新聞の記事だと主人公は「若手の米将校」とされているが、このあらすじや配役からすれば主人公はフェラーズ准将。階級からいっても、当時の年齢（1896年生まれ）からいっても「若手」とはとても言えない。さらに「昭和天皇の戦争責任問う」のが中心的なテーマの映画なのかもちょっと疑問。
なお原作者として Shiro Okamoto という名前がクレジットされているのだが、該当しそうな人物は『陛下をお救いなさいまし―河井道とボナー・フェラーズ』（ホーム社）という著書のある岡本嗣郎氏（故人。元毎日新聞編集委員だったとのこと）。「「BOOK」データベース」によれば「わが国の戦後の命運を決めた一人の日本人女性とマッカーサー軍事秘書官の宿縁を探る。」とのことなので、内容的にも符合する。
