What are Eco-Labeling and environmental product declarations?

An independently conducted market analysis examining the current and future state of Eco-Labels and Environmental Product Declarations programs confirmed a growing demand for an ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) accreditation program based on International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards that focus on determining the eligibility of a Type I Certification Schemes and Type III Program Operators. In addition, ANAB’s Eco-labeling Program provides accreditation of eco-labeling certification bodies and conformity assessment bodies that verify and validate Environmental Product Declarations.

DETERMINATION OF ELIGIBILITY

Eligibility of Environmental Labeling Certification Scheme (Type I)

An environmental labeling certification scheme owner seeking to achieve eligibility for its Eco-labeling scheme is required to comply with the all applicable requirements and processes contained in the following:

  • ISO 14020: Environmental labels and declarations – General Principles
  • ISO 14024: Environmental labels and declarations – Type I environmental labeling – Principles and procedures
  • PR 5164: Requirements/Process to Determine Eligibility of a Type I Environmental Labeling Certification Scheme
  • FA 5106: Application for Eligibility of Type I Environmental Labeling Certification Scheme

Eligibility of Program Operators for Environmental Labels and Declarations (Type III)

Program operators for Type III environmental labels and declarations seeking to achieve eligibility for participation in the pilot program must conform with the requirements and processes contained in the following:

  • ISO 14020: Environmental labels and declarations – General Principles
  • ISO 14025: Environmental labels and declarations – Type III environmental declarations Principles and procedures
  • PR 5165: Requirements/Process to determine Eligibility of a Type III Environmental Declaration Program
  • FA 5107: Application for Eligibility of Type III Environmental Declaration Programs

After completing the process of eligibility determination, each eco-labeling scheme owner or program operator will demonstrate conformance with established international environmental declaration standards and the applicable procedures of ISO conformity assessment standards.

ECO-LABELING ACCREDITATION

Third Party Eco-labeling Certification Bodies:

Certification bodies seeking to be accredited by ANAB to conduct Eco-labeling certification will be required to conform with the applicable requirements and processes contained in ISO 14020, ISO 14024, and ISO/IEC 17065, Conformity assessment – Requirements for bodies certifying products, processes and services.

Third Party Eco-labeling Certification Bodies that Verify/Validate Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs):

Certification bodies seeking to be accredited by ANAB to conduct validation/verification of EPDs are required to comply with applicable requirements and processes found in ISO 14020, ISO 14025, and ISO/IEC 17065, Conformity assessment – Requirements for bodies certifying products, processes and services.
