Marcy's Journal: A Guide to Amphibia is the official, physical, canon adaption of Marcy's journal,[4] containing information from the show, with Marcy's notes of Amphibia. Written by Matt Braly and Adam Colás, illustrated by Catharina Sukiman, and published by Disney Books and TokyoPop, it was released on December 6, 2022 for paperback,[1] and December 13 for the hardback edition.[2][5]
The book contains hidden stories, missing adventures, character insights, games, puzzles, hidden messages, and lore about the show.[6][7]
Trivia[]
- The book shares the appearance of Marcy's journal as seen in the series and is written, as such, in her style.
- The password on the first page of the book is likely "SashyAnnabanana", derived from Marcy's nicknames for Sasha and Anne respectively. There is a hint for the password on the same page which is "They call me Mar Mar", referring to Sasha, Anne, and Marcy's nicknames for each other.
- The hardback/hardcover edition of the book features a printed map of Amphibia on the inside of the book's dust jacket, drawn by Matt Braly, with more sentences written in the Amphibian alphabet.
- The green, blue, and magenta stars on the cover reference the Calamity Gems, in the same positions Marcy, Anne, and Sasha were in when Anne first opened the Calamity Box.
- The blue star has an image of a flame under it, referencing Anne's Calamity powers.
- Some pages from the book were published as a preview in August 2022 on some official sites, before being deleted shortly later.[citation needed]
- The book was originally scheduled to be released on November 15, 2022, but was later delayed to December due to complications with printing.[8][9][5]
- Matt released a hidden scroll written in the Amphibian alphabet as the first official preview of the book on September 3, 2022.[10]
- The back cover contains Anne's final words in "The Hardest Thing" translated in Amphibian alphabet.
- On November 6, 2022, Disney Television Animation published on Twitter a 50-second video of a printer printing hardcover copies of the book.[11]
- Prior to the book's publication, TheGamer's Jade King published four reviews of the book that featured additional preview excerpts.[12][13][14][15]
- Other than the regular hardcover edition, there are hardcovers signed by Matt, Adam, and Catharina.
- Each fan who purchased a signed hardcover copy from Streamily received a limited edition bookmark[16] made by Gina Garavalia, that features Marcy in her Newtopian Night Guard Ranger outfit, holding her journal by her left hand while staring at the outer walls of Newtopia under the clear blue sky.
- Each fan who purchased a signed hardcover copy from Gallery Nucleus received a sticker showing Anne with the Plantar family dancing (Hop Pop plays Wally's green accordion while Sprig plays his fiddle), and a mini-print of a manga cover-style artwork[17] based on "Anne or Beast?" made by Sukiman, which shows Anne and Sprig walking.

This image of Anne and the Plantar family dancing was made into a sticker.
Revelations and significant events[]
- The map of Amphibia included with the hardcover version includes many new revelations about several locations in Amphibia.
- The volcano seen throughout the second season which houses the third and final temple is revealed to be named Death's Eye Mountain.
- The West Tower is first seen, only being mentioned in this series before this.
- The East Tower is first seen, only being mentioned in this series before this. It bears a resemblance to ancient Japanese buildings.
- The area nearby the North Tower where Sasha and Grime initially found Barrel's Warhammer is revealed to be named the Blood Swamp.
- The Dawnblood Islands, which are visited in this book, are revealed to be in the southwest of Amphibia.
- On the road shown connecting Frog Valley to Newtopia, a large unnamed bridge can be seen passing over the Saint's Lake.
- Newts consider the term salamander to be extremely offensive despite Marcy using it in the "Marcy Theme Song Takeover".
- Multiple entries reveal that Marcy was indecisive about telling the truth to Anne and Sasha:
- When Marcy spills everything about the teleportation to Andrias, the king suggests that Marcy should not reveal the truth at all.[18]
- After being promoted to the captain of the Night Guard, Marcy promises to tell Anne and Sasha everything when they reunite, as she feels that they would understand.[19]
- After Ernst's betrayal, however, Marcy decides to hide the truth from Anne and Sasha to avoid betraying them as well.[20]
- The book reveals how Marcy revealed the truth of stranding herself and her friends to Amphibia during a game of Flipwart, as Andrias mentioned in "True Colors".
- King Aldrich was revealed to have played and beaten Andrias in Flipwart before Marcy had beaten him.
- Marcy reveals to Andrias that she "tricked" Anne and Sasha into agreeing to open the Calamity Box, revealing that the two girls initially had doubts about opening it.[21]
- Marcy describes her father as very strict.[22]
- Marcy was not notified of her family's move until the last minute.[22]
- Marcy's crossbow was a gift from Javi, Kettle, and Femur, given to her before setting off on their mission to confront the Order of the Olm.[23]
- The respective zodiac signs for Anne, Sasha, and Marcy are revealed to be Gemini (May 21–June 20), Aries (March 21–April 19), and Aquarius (January 20–February 18).[19]
- Coincidentally, Marcy's voice actress Haley Tju is also an Aquarius.
- This makes Marcy the oldest of the trio and Anne the youngest.[19]
- This also reveals the following:
- Marcy turned 14 years old between the events of "Froggy Little Christmas" and "The Core & The King" and is the only member of the Calamity Trio who could not celebrate her 14th birthday on its actual date.
- Sasha turned 14 years old sometime between the events of "Commander Anne" and "The Three Armies".
- Anne is the only member of the Calamity Trio to be on Earth for her fourteenth birthday.
- Several facts are revealed by the four pages written in the Amphibian Alphabet.
- The Calamity Gems were once separated by three distinct Amphibian lands, presumably divided by frog, newt, and toad. The nations waged wars hoping to possess all three gems, which are also revealed to be able to heal wounds and cure diseases on top of being able to destroy the enemies of those who wielded them.
- The Calamity Box was invented by a newt regarded as the oldest and wisest of them all. With it, she united the separate kingdoms under one banner based on conquering other dimensions. This brought a golden age of peace to Amphibia, but at the expense of the subjugation of other dimensions, which the inventor felt tremendously guilty about. She faded into obscurity, but returned as a ghost to seek redemption accompanied by a "winged purple companion". These are presumably Valeriana and Leander.
- After Leif stole the box and sent it to Earth, Amphibia entered a dark age. The technology used to control dangerous beasts and monsters for centuries was lost with the box and they began to overrun numerous cities like Dawnblood Castle, forcing the inhabitants to evacuate and settle elsewhere.
- When "The Three" were prophecized to come to Amphibia, it was believed they would "shake the foundations of [Amphibia]" and allow for a new beginning for the Amphibian civilization. It was not known whether they would bring salvation or punishment at the time and "dark forces", undoubtedly the Core and King Andrias, were predicted to erase their history and confuse the Three after they would arrive.
- General Yunan's last name is Longclaw.[24]
- Marcy first used her Calamity powers to open a passageway at Dawnblood Castle.[25]
- Marcy met Joe Sparrow on the Dawnblood Islands, taming him by playing her violin.[26]
- Marcy is confirmed to struggle with making friends, after being previously implied in "Scavenger Hunt".[27]
- Marcy slipped her journal into Anne's backpack during the events of "True Colors", thus explaining its appearance in "Temple Frogs".[28]
- To preserve their sanity, Sasha and Marcy's parents were not notified about their respective daughter's whereabouts until after the Frog-vasion.[29]
- Hoping Marcy would return, Marcy's father delayed the start of his job.[29]
- According to Anne, Mr. and Mrs. Waybright divorced when Sasha was four or five years old, with Mr. Waybright remarrying and Mrs. Waybright hooking up with a man who already had children.[29]
- Sasha was very private about her family life according to Anne, who theorizes that Sasha's manipulation was directly related to her struggles with her parents.[29]
- Sasha and Marcy's parents make their first visual appearance.[29]
- Marcy's parents were previously mentioned and heard in "True Colors", and both girls' parents were mentioned in "Froggy Little Christmas" and "All In".
- The last name of Gabby - the gossipy girl from "Hop 'Til You Drop" - is 'Williams'. She is also given the nickname "Gabbs the Gossip".[30]
- Anne first met the Guardian while under the effects of the anesthesia from her dental exam in "Adventures in Catsitting".[31]
- The Guardian is addressed with it/its pronouns.[31]
- Thrift Stop closed down before the events of "Fight at the Museum".[32]
- Anne and Marcy first met on a Los Angeles beach when they were three years old. Anne noticed Marcy spending her time on the sand protecting a Vagabondia Chronicles-inspired sand castle from the ocean waves. Despite not knowing much about what Marcy was doing, Anne participated anyway; and, although the castle was lost to the sea, Anne's accompaniment made Marcy very happy.[33]
- Terri is addressed with singular they pronouns, after Anne previously referred to Terri with she/her pronouns.[34] Whether this is a retcon or if Terri goes by both sets of pronouns is unknown.
- Becka Salt, the in-universe singer of "Our Special Time of Year", is addressed with singular they pronouns; however, as Salt is intended to be a caricature of Rebecca Sugar, it is possible that Salt goes by she/her pronouns as well.[35]
- Marcy lost some memories while the Core possessed her,[36] which was implied in "The Core & The King".
- Immediately after the trio left Amphibia in "The Hardest Thing", the girls reunited with their respective parents, who were waiting for them.[37]
- Marcy, learning from her trials and tribulations in Amphibia, promises to accept change and be honest about her emotional issues.[37]
- Marcy went to the hospital for a while to recover after leaving Amphibia and the wound from being impaled was later reduced to a "faded white mark."[38]
- She also underwent psychotherapy to ease her family issues, dependence on her friends for emotional support, and being betrayed by those about whom she cared.[38]
- The Wu family moved to Hopkinton, Massachusetts (a town 25 miles [40 kilometers] west of Boston).[39]
- Hopkinton is named after English colonist Edward Hopkins and is not an Amphibia reference.
- Marcy's webcomic is titled Amphibi-Anne and is loosely based on Anne's journey in Amphibia. A studio bought the rights to it and Marcy also wonders if it could become its own animated series someday, referencing the real-life animated series.[39]
- The name Amphibi-Anne also references the original name for the series: Amphibiland.
- The cover of the book version of Marcy's webcomic bears the Newbery Medal.
- Marcy sends Anne and Sasha pictures of every "cool" bug she sees, which was previously shown in "True Colors".[39] Unlike before the teleportation when she would receive negative responses,[40] Anne and Sasha now give positive replies.
- After the invasion ended and the permanent return of Anne, Sasha, and Marcy to Earth, Terri began working with Mr. X to build a fully functional interdimensional portal for scientific purposes, however, hiding it from the government, since Mr. X did not want any nation to have such power because of the possible greed for resources or that they could do the same as the ancient newts; Terri, however, is unable to get the smallest portal to open no matter how much power was fed into it. Terri also started chatting with Marcy so that she can pass to Terri her knowledge of the Calamity Box technology. Mr. X and Terri vow to the girls to continue working on the portal and to inform them if they succeed in opening a path between worlds.[41]
- In 2029,[42] Terri calls Anne during her birthday meeting with Marcy and Sasha and notifies them about having "exciting news". The four reunite at the lab the next day.[43]
Continuity[]

- Entry 92: "Turning Point" – Anne reflects on Sasha's manipulation prior to the teleportation and hopes that they would work together when they reunite, citing their teamwork against Andrias,[40] which would eventually occur in "Commander Anne".
- Entry 93: "Thai Feud"

- The events of "Olivia & Yunan" are not chronicled due to Anne's absence. However, the following entry takes the episode's place:
- Entry 103: "Olivia & Yunan" – As Sprig sews his Frog-Man costume,[44] Anne flips through Marcy's earlier entries for additional information, leading to Anne feeling hurt that Marcy kept so much emotional struggle to herself. Anne also questions if she hurt Marcy so badly that the latter felt that Anne would not listen to/care about Marcy's news. This would lead to Anne and Sasha's discussion about Marcy in "The Beginning of the End".
- Entry 104: "Hollywood Hop Pop"
- Entry 105: "If You Give a Frog a Cookie"
- Entry 106–107: "Froggy Little Christmas"

- Entry 116: "Grime's Pupil"
- Entry 117: "The Root of Evil"
- The events of "The Core & The King" are not chronicled due to Anne's absence. However, the following entry takes the episode's place:
- Entry 118: "The Core & The King" – Anne reflects on Andrias dropping Sprig out of Newtopia Castle,[40] thinking that Andrias was trying to hurt her the same way that the "frog from the vase" (i.e. Leif) hurt him.
- Entry 119: "Newts in Tights"
- Entry 120: "Fight or Flight"
- Entry 121: "The Three Armies"
- The events of "The Beginning of the End" and "All In" are not chronicled due to intense events of the episodes. However, the events of the second flashback in "All In" of Marcy meeting Andrias for the first time are chronicled in entry 4.
- Entries 122 and 128: "The Hardest Thing"
- Multiple entries continue Marcy's unhealthy dependence on her friendship with Anne and Sasha, reaching their climax in entry 82 in which Marcy outright declares that she would abandon her family to remain with Anne and Sasha forever.
- This is also hinted in her illustrations of the trio until entry 82, almost all of which depict Marcy in the center.
- The map of Amphibia on the hardcover edition's jacket shows the road that the Plantars took from Wartwood to Newtopia, with all of their major stops being listed in chronological order, including the abandoned factories in the Ruins of Despair, Bittyburg, The Dry Swamp, Quarreler's Pass, Ribbitvale, and Stony Gulch.
- Found in between Ribbitvale and Stony Gulch, a bridge passing over the Saint's Lake can be seen, despite neither the bridge or the river being mentioned or seen in the show.
- Andrias notes in entry 9 that some frog villages have not been paying their taxes, revealing that the entry takes place by the events of "Toad Tax"/"Prison Break" and thus implying that the first nine entries take place within two months.
- Marcy beats Andrias in their first game of Flipwart,[18] which was brought up in "The First Temple" and "Olivia & Yunan".
- She also tells Andrias everything about the circumstances leading to the teleportation,[18] about which she would be mocked for in "True Colors".
- Marcy met Yunan on the ship The Green Lady,[45] a model of which appeared in "Children of the Spore".
- Yunan's monologue is mentioned in full for the first time since her debut in "Toadcatcher".[24]
- Marcy notes that Yunan is hunting someone named "Grime" because he abandoned his post,[24] revealing that entry 34 takes place between the events of "Reunion" and "Toadcatcher".
- The Vagabondia Main Theme[46] bears a resemblance to "Marcy's Theme".
- The pages that Marcy showed in the tent in "Marcy at the Gates" are shown in entry 51, along with a depiction of Bartley, Branson, and Blair.
- Entry 54 includes Marcy's interpretation of Anne and Sasha's fight in "Reunion".
- Marcy's drawings of Polly and Anne in "Scavenger Hunt" are shown in entries 55 and 56, respectively.
- In entry 63, Marcy is worried that the trio would drift apart, citing the fallout of "Reunion" and Anne choosing to stay with the Plantars.[48] Andrias exploits her worry in his proposition to Marcy that was mentioned at the end of "A Day at the Aquarium" and described in entry 64.
- The pages for entry 82 (i.e. "True Colors") have burn marks. Although these are likely intended to reference Marcy's impalement, these marks were more likely caused by the Frobots' lasers in the throne room.
- Anne introduces herself with her first name and then her first and last name,[28] as she does to Sprig and the audience in "Anne or Beast?".
- Anne's favorite moments with Sprig are the events of "Grubhog Day", "Croak & Punishment", and "Bizarre Bazaar".[49]
- Anne mentions in "Best Fronds" that she, Sasha, and Marcy would go to the beach. The beach is revealed to be where Anne and Marcy first met.[33]
- In Anne's final entry, she reassures Marcy that she would not forget her.[50] This directly leads into her discussion with Sasha about Marcy's actions in "The Beginning of the End".
- Marcy writes in entry 128 that she, Anne, and Sasha got some drinks and watched the sunset on a pier, referencing the final scene in the credits sequence for "The Hardest Thing".
Errors[]
- "Scavenger Hunt" depicts the journal with ruled paper; however, no such lines are shown here.
- Despite Marcy writing in the journal in the flashbacks in "Marcy at the Gates", the only entry from before the teleportation is an analysis of the Calamity Box.
- In said episode, Marcy says to Anne and Sasha that she is drawing up a dungeon for Creatures and Caverns. In entry 1, she mentions the same game as one of her original uses for the journal.
- Based on the context of Entry 15, it is possible that the notes and signatures from Javi and Kettle to Marcy were swapped.
- Entry 83 does not exist.
- The lack of the traditional entry number may reference how the last page of entry 82 was written while Marcy was flying back to Newtopia Castle after saving Sprig, meaning it is most likely supposed to be entry 83, just not properly mentioned by Marcy due to the intensity of the current situation.
- Although most entries cover events in either whole episodes or parts of them, entry 102 covers events across two separate episodes, "Sprig's Birthday" and "Spider-Sprig". This appears to be a timing error.
- Although entry 113 covers the events of "Sasha's Angels", Leopold Loggle is left out.
