Rain Towards Morning

The great light cage has broken up in the air,
freeing, I think, about a million birds
whose wild ascending shadows will not be back,
and all the wires come falling down.
No cage, no frightening birds; the rain
is brightening now. The face is pale
that tried the puzzle of their prison

whose freckled unsuspected hands alit.

Analysis (ai): This poem explores themes of liberation, transformation, and the power of unexpected connections. The imagery of a broken cage and released birds suggests a release from confinement and a newfound sense of freedom. The rain, described as "brightening," symbolizes hope and renewal, while the "pale face" represents the speaker's emotional journey from confusion to understanding.

The poem's structure is simple yet effective, with short lines and few stanzas. This creates a sense of intimacy and immediacy. The language is precise and evocative, with each word carefully chosen to convey a specific emotion or image. The poem's brevity also enhances its impact, leaving the reader with a lingering sense of wonder and reflection.

Compared to Bishop's other works, this poem stands out for its focus on the power of love and connection. While Bishop often explores themes of loss and isolation, this poem offers a glimpse of hope and the possibility of redemption. It is also a departure from her more descriptive and narrative poems, focusing instead on a single, powerful image.

In terms of the time period, the poem reflects the post-war era's search for meaning and renewal. The cage and the released birds can be seen as symbols of the oppression and trauma of war, while the rain and the "pale face" represent the hope for a better future. Bishop's poem speaks to the universal human desire for freedom, connection, and the transformative power of love. (hide)

Sophilia - I got the idea that Elizabeth Bishop was not totally attached to the world around her. I wonder if that could be losing her mother?, actually never known her? I liked her style. Understandable and easy reading.
