Nothing sets a come-on-in tone quite like a decked out fall doorway! Featuring plaids aplenty, this farmhouse-friendly assortment takes loose inspiration from the ubiquitous flannel finery of the season. From pumpkins to planters, here’s how to re-create this richly hued setting. (P.S. We loved it so much, it’s featured on the cover of our October issue!)

    Set the Scene

Plaid Pumpkins: Use a pencil to sketch out your desired plaid patterns on pumpkins, then alternately etch and paint as shown. Tip: Acrylic paint works best.

Bucket Blooms: Used to harvest and wash olives, slitted olive buckets make for rustic planters, as do galvanized vessels of all styles. You can also use them to give height to pumpkin piles, as seen here.

Lantern Lighting: Assorted camp lanterns add ambience come dusk. (You can fill vintage vessels with battery-operated fairy lights.)

    Warm Up Your Welcome

Bold Branches: Tuck a vibrant gathering of leafy branches into the neck of a narrow-mouthed vessel, such as an antique French milk can, so that the branches remain full and upright. (You may have to snip some leaves off the bottom of the branches.)
