Ramadi (Arabic:الرمادي; BGN: Ar-Ramādī; also formerly rendered as Rumadiyah or Rumadiya) is a city in central Iraq, about 110 kilometers (68mi) west of Baghdad and 50 kilometers (31mi) west of Fallujah. It is the capital of Al Anbar Governorate. The city extends along the Euphrates and is the largest city in Al-Anbar. Founded by the Ottoman Empire in 1879, by 2004 it had a population of about 450,000 people, the vast majority of whom are Sunni Arabs from the Dulaim tribal confederation. It lies within the Sunni Triangle of western Iraq.
Ramadi occupies a highly strategic location on the Euphrates and the road west into Syria and Jordan. This has made it a hub for trade and traffic, from which the city gained significant prosperity. Its position has meant that it has been fought over several times, during the two World Wars and again during the Iraq War and Iraqi insurgency. It was heavily damaged during the Iraq War, when it was a major focus for the insurgency against occupying United States forces. Following the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq in 2011, the city was contested by the Iraqi government and the extremist group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and fell to ISIL in May 2015. On 28 December 2015, the Iraqi government declared that it had re-taken Ramadi from ISIL, that government's first major military victory since the loss of Ramadi some seven months earlier.

Six Seconds in Ramadi: The Stand of L/Cpl Jordan Haerter & Cpl Jonathan Yale | April 2008
In March 2008, the 1/9th Marines, USMC, deployed to Ramadi, Iraq. A month later, a detachment of 50 Marines were moved to Joint Security Station Nasser where they were to take over from a contingent of Marines from the 2/8th Marines, who were scheduled to return home to America in a few weeks time.
Security for Joint Security Station Nasser was provided by two checkpoints and, on the 22 April 2008, Lance Corporal Jordan Haerter, of the 1/9th Marines, and Corporal Jonathan Yale, of the 2/8th Marines, were together holding post at one of the checkpoints. For two hours, the two Marines carried out their duty when a VBIED began to drive at full speed towards the checkpoint gate. Under Siege From The Islamic State In Ramadi
In early March, while the world was watching Iraqi government forces advance on the Islamic State (IS) in Tikrit, IS was launching a series of assaults on what little remains of the Government-held parts of the provincial capital, Ramadi, which has been under siege for over a year.
On the morning of 11 March alone — the first day VICE News spent in Ramadi — nearly two dozen IS car bombs were detonated, killing 10 and injuring 60.
In a series of interviews, Iraqi officials told VICE News that they fear Islamic State fighters will overrun what remains of Government-held Ramadi if the US did not intervene with air support. According to police in Ramadi, more than 2,000 officers have been killed since January 2014, when the Islamic State — then known mainly as ISIS or ISIL — first announced ...

Taking back control of key cities like Ramadi was a key aim of the US troop surge. In this powerful report, we accompany the soldiers fighting block by block to regain Ramadi.
Under cover of choking smoke, Iraqi and US soldiers begin their final assault on the rebels stronghold. Attention! Attention! Citizens of Ramadi remain in your houses, blares a loudspeaker warning. But its drowned out by tank fire. In the aftermath of operations in Fallujah, terrorists came to Ramadi, explains Col Ali, the Iraqi commander leading the assault. This platoon of Iraqi and US soldiers is a working model of Americas strategy for victory in Iraq. But relations with the local community remain strained. We are terrified because they treat us badly, states one man. Its hoped that things will improve when recruits from Ramadi are assigned here. In recent months, local leaders have sent thousands of young men to enlist on the understanding theyll be able to serve in their home province. I volunteered to serve to save Ramadi from wicked people, explains one recruit. But the security locals crave comes at a price. Within a few hours of the assault beginning, the streets are littered with bodies. The soldiers won this fight but there are reports of civilian casualties. What will the legacy of this battle be?

According to police in Ramadi, more than 2,000 officers have been killed since January 2014, when the Islamic State — then known mainly as ISIS or ISIL — first announced its presence in the city.
VICE News spent three days in Ramadi documenting civilian life and interviewing Iraqi officials, as the town remains under siege from the Islamic State.
