Furniture market in Canada - statistics and facts
Getting Canadian furniture from A to B
An important contributor to the Canadian economy, household and institutional furniture manufacturing sales have remained above the 250-million Canadian dollar line over the past three years. Ontario had the highest number of furniture manufacturing establishments as of December 2023, closely followed by neighboring province Quebec.Canada is a leading exporter of furniture, bested only by the United States in North America. Canada’s southern neighbor, however, is by far Canada’s biggest export partner, with the trade value of furniture exported amounting to approximately six billion U.S. dollars in 2023.
Leading retailers in Canada
The Home Depot, Leon’s Furniture Limited and Sleep Country are some of the more prominent retailers in the Canadian furniture market. Out of the 2,335 Home Depot stores in North America, about 180 are scattered across Canada. Out of all provinces and territories, Ontario was home to the most Home Depot stores in the country, with Alberta and British Columbia coming in second and third, respectively. Ontario was also home to 125 out of 303 Leon’s Furniture Limited stores, a Canadian-based retailer founded in the same province. On a global scale, it is a difficult feat for the Canadian furniture industry to compete with those of other countries, especially the American market with its much larger production capacity. Within the Canadian border, however, Ontario seems to be the furniture powerhouse, going by the number of manufacturing establishments and retail stores.
