Number of refugees and asylum seekers in Malawi 2021, by country of origin
Malawi counted around 83 thousand refugees and asylum seekers in September 2021. Around 32 thousand came from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, while some 12 thousand originated from Burundi. According to data from August 2021, most refugees and asylum seekers in Malawi were living in Dzaleka refugee camp, that was hosting over 50 thousand people. Dzaleka refugee camp is designed for ten thousand people. The situation has been putting thousands of people at serious health risk, related to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and other ailments.
