Development[]
- "It's the story of their journey trying to find their way home. It stars four kids, but it is not a kids show."
- ―Jon Watts
On May 17, 2022 Vanity Fair reported that a Star Wars series was in development for Disney+, with Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts serving as creator and executive producer. Spider-Man: Homecoming writer Christopher Ford will serve as writer.[4] Later that month, during Celebration Anaheim, the name of the show and further details were revealed, including the casting of Jude Law.[11] Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, the creators of the shows The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, which take place around the same time frame,[11] are serving as executive producers.[2] While filming Spider-Man: No Way Home, Favreau asked Watts if he was interested in directing Star Wars. Instead, Watts pitched his idea for a new series. Favreau called Filoni from Atlanta, and they joined a video call, where Watts pitched his idea.[12]
Filming[]
Filming wrapped up in January, 2023.[13] The first footage for the series was revealed at Celebration Europe in April 2023.[14] On August 12, 2023, Industrial Light & Magic confirmed via its official Twitter account that its studios in Sydney, Australia and Mumbai, India would be contributing to the series' visual effects and animation.[15] According to showrunner Watts, production for the series used a a combination of new and traditional special effects techniques including previsualization, motion capture, stop motion, and matte paintings. Watts and Ford also employed the services of Phil Tippett, who had worked on the original trilogy, to produce stop-motion animation. They also employed a retired ILM painter to produce matte paintings for the show.[16] The show used both practical effects and puppets as well as visual effects for the creatures and environment and was shot using on stagecraft, practical sets and on location. The largest practical set was that of the Onyx Cinder.[17]
Release and reception[]
The series' first official trailer was released on August 10, 2024.[18] Skeleton Crew was announced on May 26, 2022 for a release in 2023,[2] before later being moved to 2024.[19] On August 10, 2024, it was announced that the series would be released on Disney+ on December 3, 2024.[18] On November 27 that year, the series' release date was moved earlier to December 2, at 18:00 PT, with a two-episode premiere. They would be followed by a new episode every Tuesday until the final episode, episode 8, on January 14, 2025.[3]
