- "People who knew him best think he went looking for the first Jedi temple."
- ―Han Solo, on the whereabouts of Luke Skywalker
The first Jedi Temple, also known as the Ahch-To Jedi Temple,[4] was an ancient building established around 25,025 BBY[1] and maintained by the Jedi Order on Ahch-To,[2] which housed a concentration of the light side of the Force.[5] It was the first of many temples built throughout the galaxy, and one of the few that were not demolished by the Galactic Empire. Jedi Master Luke Skywalker came to live near the temple as a hermit after the destruction of his new generation of Jedi and his apprentice and nephew, Ben Solo's turn to the dark side of the Force.[2]
Description[]
The first Jedi Temple was located on an unnamed rocky island on the Unknown Regions planet of Ahch-To, which would later be named Temple Island.[6] Situated atop a high ledge,[7] the stone structure was crudely carved into a cliffside.[6] It consisted of at least one chamber that contained meditation plinths[7] and an ancient font[3] with a mosaic affixed to the floor that depicted the Prime Jedi in a state of balance and meditation.[7] A vantage point with a meditation ledge[3] overlooking the strong oceans that covered most of the planet's surface was accessible from the chamber.[6]
Behind the scenes[]
The first Jedi Temple was first mentioned in the 2015 sequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, written by Lawrence Kasdan and J.J. Abrams.[2] It later debuted in the 2017 film Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi, which was written and directed by Rian Johnson and served as a direct sequel to The Force Awakens.[6] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the first meeting place of the Jedi Order was a cave on the planet Tython.[8]
