We use an integrated, landscape-level approach to conservation that is built on the support and participation of local communities.
Our conservation programs extend to over one million acres of forest and 50% of Nepal’s red panda range!
Our work started in 2007 in the Panchthar, Ilam Taplejung (PIT) districts of eastern Nepal.
Since then, we have extended our community-based red panda conservation programs from the PIT Corridor to ten more districts across Nepal — Dolpa, Jajarkot, Jumla, Kalikot, Rolpa, Rukum East, Rukum West, Solukhumbu, Bhojpur, and Khotang.
We are also expanding our work across borders, working in Bhutan to build cross-country red panda conservation efforts.
We protect red pandas and their habitat using a holistic approach — we believe pandas, people, and the planet are deeply interconnected. Though we center our work around the red panda, we cannot save them without saving their habitat and promoting sustainable livelihoods for the people who live alongside them.
Conservation is the cornerstone of our work. We protect and restore red panda habitat in the Eastern Himalayan Broadleaf Forests of Nepal.
It started in eastern Nepal, where we are establishing the PIT Red Panda Protected Forest. Now this community-protected wildlife corridor is being expanded to remaining red panda range areas.
RPN collaborates with local governments to pursue in-depth research on red pandas in the wild. Our research provides important information on the red panda population, habitat quality, and threats like deforestation and climate change.
The information guides conservation programs and informs policy decisions surrounding environmental protection and sustainability plans.
Communities living in and around red panda habitat are often marginalized and have inadequate educational opportunities. RPN changes this through education and sustainable livelihood programs that increase revenue and help build the skills and capacity of local people.
Our education and outreach programs have reached nearly half of the people living in Nepal’s red panda range.
We use this framework to educate and empower the global community – we work with zoos and conservation institutions around the world to spread the word about red panda conservation.
