Joshua Hren, Ph.D. is an American writer, poet, book editor, and professor who authored Middle-earth and the Return of the Common Good in 2018, addressing philosophical matters found in Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium. He writes other books of theology and fiction and has contributed essays to a wide range of journals.
Having earned his Ph.D. in English in 2012, he founded Wiseblood Books in 2013 and has taught English, philosophy, and other subjects at University of Mary, Concordia University Wisconsin, George Fox University, and University of St. Thomas (Houston, Texas).
Hren also wrote essays concerning Tolkien for Contagion: a Journal of Violence, Mimesis, and Culture, vol. 24 (2017) and for New Blackfriars (2016), and in February, 2020, gave a lecture, "Middle-earth and Just-Mercy: Tolkien’s Ethics", at Schreiner University.
