Google翻訳 vs みらい翻訳 vs DeepL翻訳：日本語論文の英文要旨を訳させてみた

最近の機械翻訳の進歩は本当にすごい。以前「みらい翻訳」を試してみて、その精度におののいたのですが（「みらい翻訳」を使って仕事をしました。（使用感） - 日比嘉高研究室）、先日来、DeepL翻訳という新手のサービスが登場して話題になっています。

そこで、この度も実際にやってみました。検証材料はつい先日作ったばかりの、自分の論文の英文要旨です。英語を日常的に使わない研究者が、もっともしばしば直面する「英語を書かなければならない場面」です。
以下（１）原文の日本語要旨、（２）有料校正サービスを利用した完成版、（３）Google翻訳、（４）みらい翻訳、（５）DeepL翻訳、の順に、結果を貼り付けました。

（１）原文の日本語要旨

感想

大差なくどれもけっこうすごい（というか私がゼロから書く英文とは比較にならないくらい良い）です。せっかく比べたのにそんな結論かよ、というので恐縮ですが、私レベルのしょぼい英語力だと、どれもあんまり変わらない良いクオリティです。

ただ、完成版をみていただければわかりますが、これら３つのサービスは、どれもそのまま使えるレベルではありません。今回私も、Google翻訳とみらい翻訳を合成し、変なところを自力で書き直し（構文変えたり、単語を入れ替えたり、複数形にしたり、主語を補ったり）、あるいは日本語の方を修正してもう一回機械翻訳にかけたり（←これ有効）、なんならいっそ英文は和文とは違う文章にしたり簡略化したりして下書きを作りました。で、それを業者に送信という流れです。私レベルのヘボ英語だと、ゼロから自分で書くより質もいいし、早いし、気が楽だし、なにより遠慮会釈なくハイレベルな日本語を突っ込んでも応えてくれるのがいい。自力で英語を書くと、語彙や構文のレベルを上げられないんですよ。。。

ただですね、このクオリティまで来ていると、機械翻訳にかけたのを業者に丸投げしても、何とかなる気はします。自分の意図とは違う意味になっていないかだけ確認すれば。文法的な間違いは業者が直してくれるし、よりよい言い換え表現も提案してくれるので、まずは意味だけ正確に伝わっていればいいという考え方ですね。業者の料金は、word数単位ですから、元の英文の質が高かろうが低かろうが、値段は変わらないわけで。（私は怖くてまだやりませんけどね…）

なお、上記比較に関して細かい点を言うと、以下の感想を持ちました。

• ３文目の主語（原文の日本語では省略されている論文の書き手「私」）の解釈が分かれている。"we"としたみらい翻訳に軍配か。空白の主語を"he"と補ったDeepL翻訳は、ちょっとジェンダー・バイアス、あるんじゃない？
• ３つとも書店を複数形にしてきたので、立派だと思う。ただGoogle翻訳はややこの点弱めか。
• 関東州を"Kwantung Leased Territory"と訳したみらい翻訳、まじすごい。どんな学習をさせているんだろ…。（ここでいう「関東州」は戦前の日本の租借地なのです）

ここは別にみらい翻訳を推すサイトではないのですが、細かいところでやはりみらい翻訳が一歩リードかな、と思いました。私の分野・使い方では、と留保を付けた方がいいのかな。

ただ、DeepL翻訳は、インターフェイスや細かい機能に工夫があるようです。たとえば、作成させた英文の訳語の選択ができます。bookstoreをbooksellerにしたいとかいうときに、語にカーソルを合わせると、推測変換？で代替候補がポップアップで示されます。便利！　ただ、現状では、１箇所の訳語を変えても、連動して他が変わっていきませんね。そこがドミノ式にバタバタバタって変わっていったら、感動するなぁ。やれません？やれそうだけど。またカーソルを合わせている文も、色が変えられていて、ユーザーフレンドリーです。こうした翻訳エンジン部分以外のインターフェイスの進化も、ありがたいですね。
