In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, there are six possible girlfriends Carl Johnson can date, with two of them becoming girlfriends through the storyline.

Overview[]

Dating any of the six girlfriends is not required for 100% completion, with the exception of Millie, though she can simply be killed during her first date instead.

CJ meets Denise Robinson during the mission Burning Desire, whilst Millie Perkins is introduced in Key to Her Heart. The other girlfriends are encountered during free roam, rather than being attached to missions. Helena Wankstein, Michelle Cannes, and Katie Zhan become available to date after completing The Green Sabre. Although Helena is encountered in Red County (which is accessible from the start of the game), she does not appear until Flint County and Whetstone are unlocked. Barbara Schternvart becomes available after Yay Ka-Boom-Boom.

On PlayStation 2 and Xbox, players can initiate two-player free roam with any of CJ's girlfriends, as long as she is dating CJ and at home.

Dates[]

Three different activities are available during dates. These include a visit to a restaurant (including fast-food chains, diners, formal restaurants, and bars, alongside the bar in dance clubs), dancing at a dance club, and driving around. Each girlfriend has their own different tastes in the three activities, as well as Carl's physical appearance. After a certain number of successful dates, Carl may be invited back to her place for "coffee" (sex). Reaching a 35%-50% relationship status will give Carl access to the girlfriend's car as the game will mention that the girlfriend has shared her car keys to CJ, and once the relationship status is maxed, Carl will receive a unique outfit from the girlfriend.

Successful dates increase the relationship status with +5% each. One disastrous date can decrease it by -5%. Successful dates which are finished with a hot coffee increase the status with +10% each. A relationship status is maxed out if it reaches 100% where the girlfriend will give Carl a special outfit, and the relationship status will never increase again once it has reached its maximum limit.

The player can try their luck with a kiss, which will either increase or decrease the relationship status by 1% depending on the current progress. Gift items (flowers, dildos and short dildos) can be picked up and gifted to girlfriends during dates to increase the relationship status by 1%. Gifting several items increases it by 1% each time, so a fast and clever player might go around spawn locations for gifts and offer the various gifts in exchange for a larger increase. Doing this after completing the activity of a date is advised, as it seems the girlfriends's patience will last longer in this case than before completing the activity. Kissing only seems to increase it by 1% per date, so multiple kisses will not give any additional boost to the relationship status.

  • - Successful kiss during a date (+1% relationship status)
  • - Declined kiss during a date (-1% relationship status)
  • - Gift item during a date (+1% relationship status)
  • - Successful date (+5% relationship status)
  • - Successful date with "coffee" (+10% relationship status)
  • - Disastrous date (-5% relationship status)

Restaurant Preferences[]

CJ will gain weight from going on dinner dates, and in versions of the game that support them, it is possible to unlock achievements/trophies by going on a dinner date if it causes the relevant requirement to be fulfilled, such as eating eight times at Cluckin' Bell for the "I'll Have Two Number 9s" achievement/trophy.

Unique Dating Activities[]

Denise, Michelle and Millie have unique dating activities the other girls do not have:

For Denise, if she is driven through areas occupied by enemy gangs, she will perform a drive-by. After about five successful kills, she'll be pleased enough to take her home.

For Michelle, instead of driving her around, she might ask to be the one who will drive, and as long as Carl does not bail out of the car, the date will be successful.

For Millie, by simply appearing in a gimp suit (which will be in Carl's wardrobe after their first encounter) to pick her up, regardless of Carl's progress with Millie, she will offer to have sex with him and the progress will increase.

Map[]

Note: The Amity Seafood Restaurant in Blueberry is erroneously marked as a bar in-game, instead of being marked as a diner. If visited during a date, it will count as a dining date.

Progress[]

There are ways for a date to either turn out right or wrong. If Carl takes a girlfriend to a restaurant they like, romantic music will play and it will show the two having a good time with each other. However, if Carl takes the girlfriend to a restaurant they do not like, the girl will show displeasure with Carl, who is gobbling his food.

When dancing in a nightclub, if Carl does not score a high enough dancing score, the girlfriend will be disappointed. When driving around, if Carl insists on consistently driving in areas the girlfriend doesn't like or drives at an undesirable speed to the point that her fun meter hits zero, she will just ask to be taken home.

Hitting, punching, and shooting a girlfriend will be considered abuse, and the girlfriend will run away and end the date. Getting in a vehicle and then driving far away, as well as jumping off a high cliff to a body of water (which means Carl will live despite jumping without a parachute) will be considered as abandoning the date, leading to a deduction from Carl's progress meter. The date can also be ruined by not taking the girlfriend home after five minutes of a date, even if the date went well. If the player has gained a wanted level of at least three stars, the date will also be ruined on the spot, and the girlfriend will ask to be taken home (however, this doesn't apply to Denise).

In order to maintain and increase the relationship status, Carl must date his girlfriend regularly, otherwise the status will decrease. However, this does not apply if Carl remains outside the girlfriend's geographic area. For example, as long as he stays outside of Los Santos, he has no obligations towards Denise and his status with her will remain static so long as he is away from the city. Once he does, he may need to date Denise at least once before leaving the city again in order to maintain his present status with her.

If the progress with a girlfriend reaches zero, the girlfriend will dump Carl. A girlfriend will also dump Carl after several dates in a row ended with abuse regardless of the progress. If a mission-found girlfriend (Millie or Denise) dumps Carl or is killed, she remains that way for the rest of the game, making it impossible to date her again without restarting. Girlfriends found during free gameplay, however, can be revived or met again if the player collects all 50 oysters.

Jealous Girlfriends[]

If certain criteria are met, there is a 50% chance that another jealous girlfriend will appear 7 seconds after CJ and his date set off to return to her house following a good date. A brief cutscene will play, alerting the player of the jealous girlfriend. After the cutscene, CJ can proceed through the date as normal, however the jealous girlfriend will pursue CJ and his date.

If CJ gets too close to the jealous girlfriend, another cutscene will play in which the two girlfriends insult each other briefly. The date will then be over, and CJ is instructed to take his date back home, and CJ will lose progress with the jealous girlfriend. Alternatively, CJ can evade the jealous girlfriend.

The criteria for having a jealous girlfriend appear are as follows:

  • CJ must not go on a date with any girlfriends until he has more than one.
  • He must not evade any jealous girlfriends to the point that they despawn.
  • He must not get caught by any jealous girlfriends.

If any of the above criteria were broken at any point since the beginning of the game, jealous girlfriends will never appear, unless the save data is modified using external tools. Separate saves are not affected.

A date in which a jealous girlfriend appears can be seen in this video.

Breakup Calls[]

Occasionally, a girlfriend will call CJ and ask him to go on a date. If the phone call is ignored, the relationship status with the girlfriend will decrease.

Eventually if the player reaches the lowest level of relationship status, they will receive an angry phone call from the girlfriend dumping CJ on the phone.

Oversights[]

Random Relationship Status Decrease[]

Unlike the mission unlocking-related phone calls received throughout the game, which are forced to retry if ignored, the game will not check if the player is available to receive a girlfriend phone call due to a fault on the dating system script.[7]

As a result, whenever the player is not available to receive the date phone call prompt (while in a mission, minigame, vehicle, swimming, falling, Jetpack, Parachute, etc.), the game will force the script to initiate the phone call regardless. The phone call will be immediatelly terminated after being triggered by the script and the game will count that as the player ignoring the phone call, resulting in the "random" relationship status decrease notification.

Break-up calls are also ignored due to this oversight.

Driving Date Instructions[]

On driving dates, Katie verbally lets CJ know that she likes when he drives really fast, yet the in-game prompts tell players to slow down as she dislikes it. Similarly, Barbara tells CJ that she likes him driving at a responsible speed, even though the prompts say otherwise.

Bugs/Glitches[]

  • If Carl is wasted or busted during the cutscene in which the girl asks him for "coffee", when he respawns the camera will be in cutscene mode. While in this mode, Carl may interact with his environment semi-normally; the player will notice much odd behavior; cars and pedestrians will appear and disappear, even while visible; automatic lock-on aiming works, but the crosshairs aren't visible; the mini-map and ammo displays are missing, as are mission starting points, but walking into where the red circle would normally be will still start the mission. Getting wasted or busted again will not reset the camera. A solution to this glitch is to start a new mission or start a freight mission after which everything will return to normal.
  • Upon successfully completing a dating task, the player can visit a gym. When doing so, the date will automatically end, but if this takes place within the girlfriend's available timings, she can be picked up again on the same day. This process can be done repeatedly to increase the progress meter substantially in one day/sitting. A video showing this can be seen here.

Trivia[]

This article needs to be cleaned up to meet the standards of the GTA Wiki.
Notes: Bloated trivia. To review and better organize.
  • Helena's Bandito is coded to have a unique license plate "FULLAUTO", although this feature is unused due to the vehicle itself lacking a license plate.[8]
  • Katie and Michelle are the only girlfriends who live in he same region, as they both live in San Fierro, whereas Denise lives in Los Santos, Millie lives in Las Venturas, Helena lives in the countryside, and Barbara lives in the desert.
  • If the player collects all the oysters in the game, the various appearance demands that Carl's girlfriends make are nullified, and "coffee" is offered after every successful date. In addition, if a girlfriend dumped Carl or died, she can be found again at her original spawn location (with the exception of Millie and Denise who don't spawn in normal gameplay).
  • Denise has no unique dating activity that will improve Carl's progress, however, if Ballas, Vagos, and Aztecas are present on the streets during the drive to wherever she wants to go (or if she wants Carl to drive her around), her mood will go significantly higher when she suggests to do a drive-by and manages to shoot some of the enemy gang members. Her fun meter during drives will increase faster when she is shooting gang members. However, Carl should not shoot, especially while using Denise's window, because the game will take this as shooting her, leading to considered abuse and ending the date immediately.
  • The music that plays during the cutscene in the correct eatery is "Soul Mate" by Steve Skinner, Rick Rhodes, and Chieli Minucci. The music can be found here.
  • If CJ displeases his girlfriend by taking her to the wrong eatery during a dinner date, Rage Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name" (featured on Radio X) will play during the short cutscene, rather than the romantic music. However, in the remastered versions of the game (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Steam, mobile), the updated PlayStation 2 classic version on PlayStation 4, and The Definitive Edition, the "good date" music will still play during a bad date, as Rockstar Games removed the bad date song due to expired licensing for the track. This makes it rather confusing, as romantic music will be played even if CJ's girlfriend is unhappy.
  • If a girlfriend hasn't been brought home later than approximately five minutes after a date has been ruined, she will abandon Carl and start running around in the same fashion as if she had been abused. This includes bailing out of any vehicle and possibly getting herself killed if falling into a body of water or from a height (example here).
  • Girlfriends are immune to damage from explosions and cannot be run over by vehicles during dates. They will, however, start suffering damage once the date is abandoned due to abuse (which also results in a -15% progress loss, which is a heavier penalty than the normal -5% inflicted by a disastrous date). After the date is over, the girlfriend can be seen running around in panic like any other pedestrian and can be killed by CJ or other passers-by if she doesn't despawn first.
  • After meeting a girlfriend for the first time, whether or not she asks Carl out, if the player attacks her, she will fight Carl and run after him until he gets to a far enough distance for the girlfriend to despawn out of the location. If she accepts and Carl attacks her, it will not affect the first date.
    • Helena is the only exception and will not run after the player. However, because she is in an outdoor firing range when Carl meets her, if Carl attacks her, she will shoot at Carl while he is in her line of sight. She has a very good aim, and it is best to escape it as soon as possible.
  • There are some oddities in behavior when girlfriends are abused.
    • If CJ abuses a girlfriend, she may fight or flee. If she tries to fight him, she will eventually flee if he avoids her long enough.
    • If CJ abuses a girlfriend and she flees by jumping into water, she will die, as noted by a text pop-up.
    • If CJ exits the car after letting Michelle drive, he will fail the date, but he can immediately re-enter the vehicle and steal it back; Michelle will flee as if abused.
      • If players hold the sprint/jump button when getting back into the car from the passenger seat (which normally causes the driver to die), Michelle will not die, but will instead fall onto the ground and vanish.
  • The player can notice that Carl treats his girlfriends differently based on the dialogue he uses. He can use abusive dialogue wherein he calls his girlfriend a bitch and openly acts uninterested in what the girl says. Other times, he acts like his regular self, using his ghetto accent. And at times, he acts very gentlemanly and uses a soft, gentle voice, and even sounds interested in menial conversation lines the girlfriend says. The dialogue he uses does not affect the date, however, and the girlfriends do not react to the dialogue he uses. Like with other gameplay aspects, Carl's dialogue and voice will change when he reaches 50% fat; for instance, he will call himself "Big Daddy" when he picks up Barbara, and most of his responses will be along the lines of "This conversation is giving me an appetite".
    • CJ mostly seems to use a gentlemanly voice with Michelle Cannes, as they both share a genuine passion, specifically for cars/racing.
      • Denise goes out with CJ after he rescues her, but she implies that she's very promiscuous, as she had three children in the past, possibly due to prostitution. She's also mostly interested in looking good and wants to open a beauty shop.
      • Millie only dates CJ for a sexual BDSM relationship, and because she aids him in Breaking the Bank at Caligula's in exchange for a percentage of the take.
      • Helena seems to be well-off; however, she seems to have some emotional issues as she sometimes asks CJ in a sad tone if he "thinks she's a bitch" (implying she must have low self-esteem) and sometimes makes threats (when ignored or during car rides) that she will kill/injure herself and/or CJ.
      • Katie Zhan mostly talks about how she doesn't like living where she currently lives, likes rap music and Madd Dogg, and dislikes OG Loc's music. When CJ drives recklessly, she mentions working at the ER and how it gives her a thrill, implying she has an erotic interest in injuries.
      • Barbara mentions that her first husband called her a control freak, which isn't far off from her in-game personality, as she dislikes driving fast and is very nitpicky about certain places, and makes sarcastic comments to CJ when he drives slowly, that it's "easy to follow the law." In the beta, CJ could have been busted by her (possibly before dating her), as he has unused voicelines angrily remarking about how he "just got busted by a bitch."
  • CJ's girlfriends have similarities to Niko Bellic's girlfriends (Karen Daniels, Carmen Ortiz, Kiki Jenkins, Alexandra Chilton and Kate McReary) from Grand Theft Auto IV.
    • Michelle and Carmen are Latinas.
    • Katie and Carmen are nurses.
    • Helena and Kiki are lawyers.
    • Millie and Carmen are part-time models known to be kinky and promiscuous.
    • Two of them are law enforcers. Barbara works for the police, whilst Michelle works for the IAA.
    • Katie Zhan and Kate McReary have the same name, as do Michelle Cannes and Karen "Michelle" Daniels.
    • In each game, two girls are met in the story: Denise and Millie in GTA San Andreas, Michelle and Kate in GTA IV. Moreover, two of them (Millie and Kate) can be killed or can dump the protagonist near the end of the game.
      • CJ can murder Millie to get her passcard quicker (he can technically kill any girlfriend, but with no unique consequences); if he fails to satisfy her during dates, he will get her passcard in the same fashion.
      • Kate dies in one of the two endings. However, Millie can survive to the game's ending without dying or dumping CJ, unlike Kate, whose fate to either die or dump Niko is unavoidable.
    • Girlfriends can become jealous if players date more than one. If CJ cheats (and meets the right criteria), then any of his girlfriends will stalk him when on a date with someone else. However, if Niko cheats, only Kiki will stalk him when he's on a date.
    • Also, CJ and Niko have a love interest outside of the listed girlfriends - Catalina and Alejandra. Both of these women are Latinas with no known surname, and were introduced to the protagonist by their best friend (Cesar Vialpando and Roman Bellic) via a phone call.
