The Three Cairns Climate Program for the Global South is an ambitious initiative at the Yale School of the Environment aimed at supporting next generation leaders.

On This Page

Established with a historic gift from the Three Cairns Group, the program expands access to advanced education and training for qualified students and professionals committed to working to address climate change. The cornerstone of the  Three Cairns Climate Program for the Global South is Three Cairns Scholars, which is focused on Global South students who are committed to combatting climate change in their home countries and region. As Scholars, students will receive tuition and non-tuition support designed to help them succeed in YSE’s master’s degree programs and when they return home to work on climate solutions. Applications open each September with an early-December deadline for admission in the following academic year.

Three Cairns Fellows, another scholarship opportunity provided through the Three Cairns Climate Program for the Global South, supports mid-career environmental professionals seeking to enroll in one of YSE’s online certificate programs — Financing and Deploying Clean Energy, offered by the Center for Business and Environment at Yale (CBEY), Tropical Forest Landscapes: Conservation, Restoration and Sustainable Use, run by the Environmental Leadership & Training Initiative (ELTI) and  Urban Climate Leadership, offered by the Hixon  Center for Urban Sustainabiity.  Three Cairns funding also is supporting the development of a new online certificate program with a focus on the Global South in environmental data science for climate solutions.

Please check back for frequent news and updates about the Three Cairns Climate Program for the Global South at YSE. We look forward to updating you with the latest news on this transformational program!

The Global South’s Next Generation of Climate Leaders

This fall, YSE welcomed its second cohort of Three Cairns Scholars. The 21 Scholars, who come from 13 countries in the Global South, are focused on a broad scope of climate solutions — from promoting regenerative agriculture in Brazil to decarbonizing transportation in the Philippines to building a sustainable economy in Bhutan. Meet some of these emerging climate leaders:

    Sherab Dorji
    Three Cairns Scholars

    Sherab Dorji, Bhutan

Goal: Develop and enhance community-centered policies and programs that build climate resilience and foster economic development and empowerment in the Global South

Bhutan has a constitutional mandate to become carbon neutral and a requirement that 60% of its land must remain under forest cover. Ultimately, it aims to become carbon negative.

Sherab Dorji ’26 MEM is working to balance conservation goals in Bhutan with economic growth through effective policymaking. She is specifically focused on the impact of climate change, which has disproportionally affected lower-income and rural areas of the country.

    Arriesgado
    Three Cairns Scholars

    Mars Arriesgado, Philippines

Goal:  Incorporate climate risk assessments in coastal urban areas in East Asia and the Pacific

Cities around the world are grappling with a slate of complex social, economic, and environmental challenges. Yet, many of them are simply unequipped to meet them due to outdated, overburdened infrastructure and green skills gaps among their workforces. Mars Arriesgado ‘26 MEM has spent the past several years supporting climate mitigation efforts in the Philippines, a country that is highly vulnerable to floods, cyclones, storm surges, droughts, and other natural disasters.

    Isabela Filgueira Campos
    Three Cairns Scholars

    Isabela Filgueira Campos, Brazil

Goal: To advance climate change mitigation by contributing to our understanding of the factors that influence ecosystem services in tropical forests

Brazil’s conservation efforts are greatly affected by agribusiness’ impact on its tropical forests. It is at this intersection of agricultural practices and forest conservation that Isabela Filgueira Campos ’26 MESc hopes to make a positive impact.

    Watson Mwabila
    Three Cairns Scholars

    Watson Mwabila, Zambia

Goal: Open new  pathways to an equitable clean energy transition

As a program specialist at the United Nations Development Program in Zambia, Watson Mwabila ‘26 MEM supported the Bank of Zambia's policy development on the issuance of green bonds. The bonds are a vital part of the country’s climate mitigation, adaptation, and financing goals. They are also personal to Mwabila, who grew up in a rainfall-dependent, rural area of the country and saw first-hand how climate change-fueled droughts negatively impacted livelihoods and communities.

    Bishwabandhu Acharya
    Three Cairns Scholars

    Bishwabandhu Acharya, Nepal

Goal: Model climate-related disturbance and integrate forest management strategies to develop nature-based climate solutions

Forest restoration through sustainable management practices in Nepal can advance nature-based climate solutions. Forest fires in the country, however, are altering composition and growth rates and making forests more vulnerable to disease. There were more than 5,000 wildfires in Nepal in 2024, and climate models predict the country will face more frequent drought conditions.

Bishwabandhu Acharya ’26 MFS is researching how disturbances such as fires impact the health and regenerative capabilities of forests.

My goal is to utilize analytical tools and policy frameworks to design solutions that are rooted in care, striking a balance between a localized understanding of vulnerable populations with practical, effective applications.”
