New Buffalo Studies
Recently I was in New Buffalo and took advantage of a sunny Sunday to make some watercolor studies of Lake Michigan. All are 4 x 6 inches. I gave up on the last one because I was cold and wet, and it was getting dark.

First Novel
This painting was inspired one night while walking home from my old studio in downtown Ferndale. I caught a glimpse of a young person typing in one of the many basement apartments along Nine Mile. Several sketches preceded the actual painting.

When I was in art school at the University of Iowa there was a lot of talk about drawing, especially pertaining to line.

Head Study
The worst thing about going through all my old drawings was having to spray them with that noxious fixative. I went through over a dozen cans. Fortunately my studio is big and has good ventilation.

Charcoal Study
I just finished cataloging well over a thousand old drawings, watercolors, pastels, prints, and oils, including thirty-five sketchbooks. I am going to post some of them in the next few weeks as I complete a portrait commission. Here is the first.

Kenneth B. Katz
Ken Katz is an art conservator and the 2014 president of the Prismatic Club in Detroit. He is also a mountain climber, and some of the mountains he has climbed are represented in the paintings which hang behind him. Also in the paintings are several buildings in Detroit which are of significance to him. The setting for the portrait is the interior of the Prismatic Club.
