Drive

If I drive for you, you get your money. You tell me where we start, where we’re going, where we’re going afterwards. I give you five minutes when we get there. Anything happens in that five minutes and I’m yours. No matter what. Anything a minute on either side of that and you’re on your own. I don’t sit in while you’re running it down. I don’t carry a gun. I drive.” - The Driver

Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive is a action drama film. The film is based on the 2005 novel of the same name by James Sallis. The film follows an unnamed Hollywood stunt driver who moonlights as a getaway driver. He quickly grows fond of his neighbor, Irene and her young son, Benicio. When her debt-ridden husband, Standard is released from prison, the two men take part in what turns out to be a botched million-dollar heist that endangers the lives of everyone involved. The film stars Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Christina Hendricks, Ron Perlman, Oscar Isaac, and Albert Brooks.
Ryan Gosling’s The Driver is a Hollywood stunt driver who moonlights as a getaway driver. Gosling gives an enthralling, alluring performance that is simply one for the ages.
Carey Mulligan’s Irene Gabriel is the neighbor of The Driver who he grows fond of. Mulligan gives an exquisite performance that is layered with a lot of depth. She’s quickly becoming one of my new favorite actresses.
Bryan Cranston’s Shannon is the manager of The Driver and an auto shop owner. Cranston gives a impeccable performance, he truly doesn’t miss for me.
The rest of the supporting cast all gives compelling, vigorous performance but I have to note that Isaac, Perlman, and Brooks are the stand outs in the film as well. The cinematography, score, and soundtrack is flawless. Refn’s directing style is spectacular! I can totally see why NWR is Caleb’s favorite filmmaker, he’s excellent and have so much range given in each film he does. The first half of the film is a nice slow burn but the second half is fast paced and it feels like we don’t get a chance to catch our breathe, this film is now one of my favorites of all time. I’m very happy that I waited long enough to finally watch it with my favorite person in the entire world, Caleb, he always make everything more exciting and just feels right with him. The film didn’t disappoint at all, it lived up to the hype.
