At 91 kg and 180 cm Richmond's Maurie Sheahan was powerfully built but he also boasted plenty of pace, was strong overhead, and approached the game with formidable vigour and tenacity, making him close to the ideal full back, in which position he graced Richmond teams for most of his eight-season, 121-game VFL career. A member of Tiger premiership-winning teams in 1932 and 1934 he also played in the losing sides of 1929 and 1933. Along with the likes of Martin Bolger, Basil McCormack and Jack Baggott Sheahan gave Richmond the most highly-rated VFL backline of the early 1930s.
