Incoming Senate Republican leader, John Thune, called on current majority leader of the Senate Chuck Schumer to sanction the International Criminal Court (ICC) over its warrants against Israeli officials; which he has called “outrageous and unlawful”. Citing war crimes, ICC prosecutor Karim Khan has asked a pre-trial panel at the Hague to approve his request for arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant and three Hamas leaders who have since been killed. Thune sent a message “to Israel and Jews around the world” that “reinforcements are on the way”, stating that when the Republicans gain control of the Senate with the inauguration of the Trump administration, they will “make clear that the United States Congress stands firmly in Israel’s corner”.
