GOLDEN SUCCESS COLLEGE - MANILA
The Problem and Its Background
Introduction
Humanities and Social Science can help you see what's going on in our society.
The word "HUMANISTA" will be used to describe those who will be participating
in the HUMSS strand. The study of human behavior and interaction in social,
cultural, environmental, economic, and political contexts falls under the umbrella
of humanities and social sciences. This strand will assist you in improving your
speaking abilities. Humanista excels at debating since this strand is littered with
them. As a HUMSS student, I strongly advise you to pursue this strand because
it will raise your trust and allow you to showcase your secret talents. But how
does educational institution can provide a great Humanista, a great servant or
even how does school can give a good quality of learning in the midst of
pandemic.
Humanities and Social Sciences student are known for being well in terms of
communication skills, but now that the world is facing pandemic how does the
development of communication skills change. Technologies is the platform of
education in this time where the there is no face to face class in the way of
learning is through educational application such as Google Meet, Google
Page | 6
GOLDEN SUCCESS COLLEGE - MANILA
Classroom, Zoom and also text lectures. The way of learning in the midst of
pandemic lessen the quality of education specially for those students who is
modular learner and taking the strand of Humanities and Social Sciences strand,
how those students can develop the things needed to develop like
communication skills and how this new learning system change the way of
Humanities and Social Sciences student on learning things.
The new
effect of this new learning system is a struggle to all of of the strudents around
the world. This research is all about the Effect of the New Learning System to
Humanities and Social Sciences Modular Learner Communication Skills, In this
chapter the researchers will focus to introduce the issue that the researchers
wants to study and to know the opinions of the students who is affected to this
issue. This will give show the problems that the researchers wants to give an
answer, this also show where will this study take place and who are the people
will be involve in this study and also this part will showcase what the researches
want to aim upon doing this rearch.
Year
2019 up until now, pandemic outbreak affects everyone in all aspects. Due to
this, learning system in education must have a change in which students only
meet their professors online and the information and knowledge needed by the
student will get in modules that will issued. Many student says that traditional
Page | 7
GOLDEN SUCCESS COLLEGE - MANILA
learning system is more better than the new learning system because the source
of knowledge of students will gather are from the teachers unlike in the this new
learning system that the only place to gather information is through online. As of
today, many students struggles in the new learning system not just physically but
also emotionally and mentally. It clearly shows that the mental health of every
students are also affected due to this matter. There are a number of issues
related to online classes and the quality of learning is lessen because of the
barrier given by the new learning system. Any teaching, learning and assessment
solution must be aware of this fact. Learners doing well often have a good level
of independent learning and high levels of communication skills which can be get
if both sides is responsible and capable to cope the new ways of learning. On the
other hand not everyone has a same learning styles so it is needed to give extra
focus specially to those students who is having a hard time in this time.
Statement of the Problem
The researchers’ aims to answer the following questions regarding to their
study entitled, ’’ Effect of the New Learning System to Humanities and Social
Sciences Modular Learner Communication Skills’’.
1. What are the ways of Humanities and Social Sciences modular learner to
improve their communication skills while in the new learning system?
2. How does new learning system affects the Humanities and Social Sciences
modular learner communication skills?
Page | 8
GOLDEN SUCCESS COLLEGE - MANILA
3. What are the changes that a Humanities and Social Sciences modular learner
experience while studying in the new learning system?
4. What are the challenges that the Humanities and Social Sciences modular
learner
faces during new learning system that involves in communication skills?
5. How important for a Humanities and Social Sciences modular learner to
improve their communication skills?
Theoretical Framework
The
researchers harbored this study on the following theories. The following theories
helped the researchers to aim their objectives about The Effect of The New
Learning System to Humanities and Social Sciences Modular Learners
Communication Skills The Triarchic Theory of Intellectual Abilities. According to
the Theory of Intellectual Abilities (Sternberg, 1985; 1986:23), three kinds of
intellectual abilities exist, namely analytical, creative, and practical abilities.
Analytical or componential intelligence includes academic tasks, critical thinking
capacities, and dynamic thinking. Creative Intelligence or, also known as
experimental intelligence, is flexible with new knowledge and new task. Creative
Intelligence is also an ability of a person to apply its existing knowledge to current
Page | 9
GOLDEN SUCCESS COLLEGE - MANILA
problems, aside from that, creative intelligence has two (2) types: Novelty and
automatization. Novelty concerns how an individual responds when they
experience something new. Automatization concerns how an individual figure out
to perform repetitive tasks naturally. It identifies practical intelligence as to how
individuals respond to their current circumstances and can adjust to it and
capable to deal with reality. A person who has this practical intelligence is difficult
to take advantage of. Measures of abilities focus mainly on analytical abilities,
whereas all three types of abilities need to be regarded as equally important.
Research by Sternberg (1997b:24) showed that: The more we teach and assess
students based on a broader set of abilities, the more racially, ethnically, and
socioeconomically diverse our achievers will be.
The Theory of Mental Self-Government. Sternberg developed the Mental
SelfGovernment learning hypothesis in 1994. It is an idea of intelligence that
likens to mixes of individual inclinations from three levels of Mental Self-
Government. These three levels relate to: Functions of Governments of the Mind
which includes Legislative (making, arranging, envisioning, and detailing),
Executive (actualizing and doing), and Judicial (judging, assessing, and
contrasting). Stylistic Preferences Includes Internal (Like to be by themselves)
External (Like to collaborate and work in groups. And lastly, Forms of Mental
Self-Government, includes Monarchic (These people perform best when goals
are singular. They deal best with one goal or need at a time) Hierarchic (these
people can focus on multiple goals at once and recognize that all goals cannot
Page | 10
GOLDEN SUCCESS COLLEGE - MANILA
be fulfilled equally. These people can prioritize goals easily), Oligarchic )These
people deal well with goals that are of equal weight, but they have difficulty
prioritizing goals of different weight) Anarchic (These people depart from form
and precedent. Often they don't like or understand the need for rules and
regulations. They operate without rules or structure, creating their problem-
solving techniques with insights that often easily break existing mindsets). The
point of this theory is that each student has their way of learning or
selfgovernment, but still they were taught by just one teacher that has different
selfgovernment. Furthermore, research by Sternberg emphasizes that students'
learning and thinking styles(Sternberg, 1997a) (which are usually ignored),
together with their ability levels, play an important role in student performance
(Sternberg, 1992:134; 1994:36-40; Sternberg and Grigorenko, 1997:295). The
Theory of Mental Self-Government refers to an inventory of different thinking
styles that shows people's preference for thinking patterns.
Where
the Triarchic Theory focuses on the ability itself, the theory of Mental
SelfGovernment refers to different thinking styles which makes up the preference
in using abilities (Sternberg, 1990:366-371). In light of the above theories, this
study adopted the theory of mental self-government as the most appropriate one
in enhancing students 'academic performance at UNZA main campus. The
reason is that the learning and thinking styles of students at the campus can
either be reinforced, leading to excellent academic performance or hindered
Page | 11
GOLDEN SUCCESS COLLEGE - MANILA
leading to poor academic performance. This is heavily contingent upon the
availability and provision of several essential facilities such as excellent study
materials, accommodation, conducive learning environment (lecture theatres),
good water, and sanitation facilities among others. These being available and in
the provision, students' potential abilities to be analytical, creative, and practical
as described in Triarchic theory also become reinforced.
Conceptual Framework
Scope and Limitations
This
study focuses on the Effect of the New Learning System to Humanities and
Social Sciences Modular Learner Communication Skills. It revolves to the issue
of the new learning system to the students communication skills and how this
way of learning change the quality of learning does a student have when using
the traditional way of learning.
This
study is for the Grade 11 and Grade 12 students of Golden Success College
Manila who is taking a strand of Humanities and Social Sciences who choose the
modular modality in the school year 2020-2021.
Significance of the Study

This study will focus to the topic of the “Effect of The New Learning
System to Humanities and Social Sciences Modular Learners Communication
Skills”.
Benefiting the study are the various sectors as follows To the students,
the direct recipients of the output of this research are the Humanities amd Social
Sciences students who's learning communication skills. Any improvement of
classroom management techniques can pave the way of producing learning and
discipline.
To the parents, As parents enrolled their children in this institution,
comes with self-assurance that their children are given more education that
would make them a functional individual and also to improve their communication
skills.
To the teachers, this study will be very beneficial to the teachers who's
teaching a humss strand and communication teachers, especially to the teachers
who are still newbie in the teaching profession. Through this research, teacher
may purposefully discover how classroom management is conductive to learning.

Pandemic - A pandemic is defined as "an epidemic occurring worldwide, or over
a wide area, crossing international boundaries and usually affecting numerous
people". The classical definition includes nothing about population immunity,
virology, or disease severity.
CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF LITERATURE AND STUDIES
This
chapter contain some studies that helps to give supoort the topic chosen by the
researchers where it focuses on the Effect of The New Learning System to
Humanities and Social Sciences Modular Learners Communication Skills to
prove that the certain issue in this research is existing in this time where the
students uses technology as a solution to the educational problem cause by the
pandemic that the society facing in this time Students Motivation
Blended Learning
According to the article writtin by Alpala (2011), Due to its dual component,
which blends face-to-face sessions with virtual learning in order to offer students
a wide choice of materials and resources structured in a systematic way, blended
learning has become one of the most frequent approaches to teach EFL (English
as a Foreign Language). Because new technologies have been implemented and
Page | 15
GOLDEN SUCCESS COLLEGE - MANILA
teachers have to suggest new ways of working to showcase resources that
complement EFL Face-to-Face lessons, teachers and students have changed
the way this educational process is viewed throughout time. However, in order to
be built, a Blended Course must have a pedagogical foundation for each context
where it is designed. This article aims to describe various integrative Blended
Learning components and how they've been used in different studies were
conducted circumstances, as well as some considerations to keep in mind when
building, implementing, and assessing this model. Furthermore, it encourages
teachers to consider Blended Studying (BL) as a potential and innovative
approach to learning EFL, utilizing all developing pedagogical technologies.
Positive and Negative Effect of New Learning System
According to Alawamleh, M. (2020), The traditional learning is a way of learning
uses for many years it is a learning where the presence of the teacher and a
student is connected in real time which make easy for the student to learn
properly and it is easy for them to develop the communication skills that the
students have because the instructor managed to teach linear method to the
student that gives more focus to the students while online learning is way of
learning uses technologies because of the pandemic it is a way of learning that
unbounded and dynamic, it uses asynchronous communication and a real-time
information however this way of learning is not applicable for all the students in
Page | 16
GOLDEN SUCCESS COLLEGE - MANILA
this time. Online learning has a postive and negative effects to the quality of
learning that a student can adopt. Positive effect of online learning is it enhances
the understanding of a student, it reduces the failure of the students, it will show
the versatility of a student in participation to a class and the accessibility to the
information needed by the student while studying the reason why it is more
convenience while the negative effect of it is, it limits the interaction of the
students to other people where they can't able to improve the skills, the learning
process is using applications and also text base lectures that makes more
complicated to learn and lastly it is not applicable for all the students and this is
the reason why the skills of the students is not improving too much unlike
tradional learning.
Communication Skills Development in New Learning System
Based to
the article written by Alawamleh, M. (2020), The development of the
communication skills of a student depends on the instructor. An instructor has a
role to be an effective comminicator and that will be adopt by the student who
interact with instructor and in this way the efficiency of the communucation skills
of a student will be higher than expected. Most of the people define online
learning as a solution to the educational problem that the student facing and it is
a way in accessing technologies to become flexible in participation in a class and
this way is more convenient than before. However the people who experience
Page | 17
GOLDEN SUCCESS COLLEGE - MANILA
online learning which are the students idenfy the issues that online learning has
problems where there are students who left behind in this new learning system
and the communication skills are not improving because online learning uses a
non-verbal communucation for the modular learnerns which is hard for the
student to develop the skill that they needed to develop so that online learning is
a faceless way of study where if it is not use properly there are misunderstanding
and it could turn negative in the eyes of the people who experience it.
Distance Education
In an
article written by Dodd, A. (2009), Rapid advancement in information technology
has had an effect on how education is delivered and experienced. The effect of
online education on students' success and persistence in their first year of
university was investigated using archival data. The findings of this study indicate
that first-year university success and persistence vary substantially between
students who have had prior online education experiences and those who have
not.
Education in geographically isolated and scattered rural areas has long been a
source of consternation for educational policymakers in Canada and around the
world. Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada's easternmost province, has a
population of approximately 505,000 people, with around half of them living in
Page | 18
GOLDEN SUCCESS COLLEGE - MANILA
rural settlements. Almost two-thirds of the province's 285 public schools were
located in rural areas during the 2006-2007 school year (Newfoundland and
Labrador, 2006; 2007). Surprisingly, about a third of the province's public schools
are designated as "necessarily existent" – they can't be closed because the
distance to the nearest school is too great School by bus is too far away to be
practical, particularly in bad weather. In the past, schools in the province's most
remote areas struggled to attract and maintain trained teachers with the
necessary subject matter skills, making it impossible for some rural schools to
have a full range of course choices (Crocker & Riggs, 1979; House, 1986; Riggs,
1987; Crocker, 1989). This problem has gotten worse in recent years. The aim of
the study was to look at one approach that has been used to solve this issue,
and how that solution – distance e-learning – has impacted subsequent student
performance and achievement.Newfoundland and Labrador has seen rapid
urbanization and outmigration over the last quarter-century as a result of drastic
changes in labor market conditions in the province's resource-based industries
(e.g., fisheries, oil). Many of the province's geographically scattered rural
communities have seen their populations decline due to demographic changes
and shifting age structures (Galway & Dibbon, 2008).
increasing number of rural high school graduates in the province have completed
a portion of their schooling in non-traditional classroom settings such as on-line
learning environments. These graduates make up a small percentage (less than
Page | 19
GOLDEN SUCCESS COLLEGE - MANILA
15%) of the first-year student population at Memorial University of Newfoundland,
the province's university. Although post-secondary student persistence theories
have looked into the effects of student context characteristics, none have
considered the impact of prior on-line distance course experience on post-
secondary student outcomes.
CHAPTER 3
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research Design
The
main purpose of the study is to find out the “The Effect of the New Learning
System to Humanities and Social Sciences Modular Learner Communication
Skills” inside Golden Success College- Manila Branh using qualitative research
to accomplish this aim, a descriptive research was conducted As defined by
McCombes (2020), descriptive research can answer questions like what, where,
when, and how, but not why questions. Its main goal is to understand the
population, situatuin, or phenomenon accurately and systematically. This design
was found suitable because the study deals with ascertaining the new learning
system of the Golden Succes College students.
Research Locale

Due to
the ongoing pandemic the researchers conducted the study virtually to the
students of Golden Success College- Manila Branch. The researhers used online
platfom to be able to communicate to the responsdents of the study. The
respondents answer an online survey that the researchers issue. This study was
conducted in the second semester of the school year 2020-2021.
Description of the Respondents
The
researchers chose the students of Golden Success College- Manila Branch
specifically Grade 11 and Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences modular
learner. The researchers chose convenience sampling because the participants
are chosen based on their availability and willingness to participate, convenience
sampling is possibly the simplest technique of sampling but it is very helpful to be
able to conduct the survey
Research Instrument
The
instrument used for this research is a Online Survey/ Google Form. The question
included five questions by asking individuals that included demographic qestions
as well as questions regarding to Golden Success College student’s effect of
new learning system.

The
researchers chose Google Form by sending links therefore they will have more
time in giving more accurate answers. The questionnaire will consist of various
types of questions such as multiple response questions to gather all information
from the 30 respondents.
Data Gathering Procedure
Before
the researchers conduct a survey, the researchers first gives a letter of approval
that being prepared before conducting an online survey to the respondents which
are the Grade 11 and Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences modular leaner
of the Golden Success College- Manila Branch. Next after the respondents
answering the questions in the given survey the researchers gather the data
where the researechers tallied and tabulated so that it can be easier to
understand as an illustration to the result of the conducted research of the study.
Statistical Treatment of the Data
