The Spiral Hill is a location from Tim Burton's 1993 animated feature film, The Nightmare Before Christmas. It serves as one of the most recognizable elements from the film and in related media, making it an icon throughout the film itself and related media.
Background[]
The Spiral Hill is a curled hill which is accessed after exiting Halloween Town. All around the Spiral Hill are a graveyard with various graves on it and a pumpkin patch. Amongst one of the graves is a doghouse-shaped grave of a dog named "Zero", who is Jack's pet ghost dog. Behind the Spiral Hill is a full moon and below the hill is a pumpkin patch. The hill appears to be sentient when one walks at the very end of its edge, like when Jack walks on it just as the hill uncurls itself to create a bridge which leads Jack to the Hinterlands.
Role in the film[]
After Jack Skellington grew tired of celebrating Halloween, amongst the areas he passes through are the graveyard and the pumpkin patch while Sally watches Jack leave Halloween Town in sadness. As Jack reaches the area, he brings his pet dog Zero to help accompany him and upon stepping on the Hill's very edge, it uncurls itself to create a bridge to lead him to the Hinterlands, just as he plans to leave Halloween Town, much to Sally's worry.
The Spiral Hill can be seen in the background during the part where in the scene where Lock, Shock, and Barrel's treehouse appears, which is the setting of the musical number "Kidnap the Sandy Claws".
After Jack defeats Oogie Boogie and then rescues Santa Claus to save Christmas, the Spiral Hill and all parts of Halloween Town are covered in snow to which during the end of the film, Jack and Sally sing "We're Simply Meant to Be" just as they begin a relationship where the two happily stand on the snow-covered Spiral Hill, ending the film.
