Percy Jackson and the Olympians is an American web television series for Disney+. It is an adaptation of the book series of the same name. The series premiered on December 19, 2023. The second season premiered on December 10, 2025, while the third season is expected to be released in 2026.[1][2]
Synopsis[]
Geared towards a general audience and especially tweens, teens, and young adults, the live action series tells the fantastical story of a 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson, who's just coming to terms with his newfound supernatural powers when the sky god Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt. Now Percy must trek across America to find it and restore order to Olympus.[3]
In Season Two, Camp Half-Blood is threatened when Thalia's tree is poisoned. Percy sets out to acquire the Golden Fleece which is located in the Sea of Monsters. He must also rescue his friend Grover who has mysteriously disappeared and learns more about his godly lineage.[4]
In Season Three, Percy and his friends team up with the Hunters of Artemis to rescue Artemis and Annabeth from the Titan Atlas. Helping them are a mysterious brother and sister named Nico and Bianca di Angelo, whose lineage is most enigmatic.[5]

Additionally, the series features numerous monster characters. Season one features the Minotaur, the Chimera, and Cerberus. Season two features Scylla, Charybdis, the Sirens, and the Hippocampi.
Series creator Rick Riordan cameos twice in the first season. First in "I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher" as a teacher at Yancy Academy, and then in "We Visit the Garden Gnome Emporium" as an unfortunate mailman who became one of Medusa's victims.

On May 14, 2020, author Rick Riordan announced the development of an adaptation of his book franchise, Percy Jackson & the Olympians. He will be acting as a writer, and both he and his wife, will be involved in every aspect of the shows creation. The series is confirmed to last for five seasons, with each season serving as an adaptation of a book in the series.[10][11] The first season primarily adapts the first book, The Lightning Thief.
During Disney Investor Day 2020, the official Percy Jackson and the Olympians logo was unveiled.[12]
On January 25, 2022, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the series was officially greenlit, with Disney+ giving a series order. Riordan, Steinberg, Shotz, and Bobin serve as executive producers along with Rebecca Riordan, Bert Salke, Monica Owusu-Breen, Jim Rowe, and Gotham Group's Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell, and D.J. Goldberg.[13]
On March 26, 2022, it was reported that Anders Engstrom and Jet Wilkinson joined as directors for the series, and that the first season includes eight episodes.[14]
On March 27, 2023, Rick Riordan confirmed that scripts for a second season are being developed, though he added that the series has not been renewed for a second season yet.[15]
On February 7, 2024, the series was officially renewed for a second season which will adapt The Sea of Monsters.[16]
On March 14, 2025, it was announced that the second season would premiere in December of that same year, with a third season, based on The Titan's Curse, renewed early.[17]

On April 11, 2022, Variety reported that Walker Scobell had been cast in the titular role.[18]
On May 5, 2022, Rick Riordan announced that Aryan Simhadri and Leah Sava Jeffries joined the cast of the series playing Grover Underwood and Annabeth Chase.[19]
On November 7, 2022, it was revealed that Lin-Manuel Miranda had been cast as Hermes.[20]
On July 25, 2024, at SDCC, Daniel Diemer was cast in the role of Tyson, Percy's half-brother.[21]
On November 25, 2024, it was announced that Courtney B. Vance would replace the late Lance Reddick as Zeus.[22]
On July 24, 2025, at SDCC, Levi Chrisopulos and Olive Abercrombie were cast as Nico and Bianca di Angelo respectively, the children of Hades.
Filming[]
On February 23, 2022, Rick Riordan revealed that filming was set to begin on June 1st.[23]
On June 2, 2022, Rick Riordan announced that filming had officially begun and new cast members have been revealed.[24]
On July 24, 2022, Riordan stated that they are in the middle of filming episode 2 and parts of episode 3 and suspects that filming would be done by December. He added that the first season, once completed, would take most likely come out in early 2024.[25]
On February 2, 2023, Becky Riordan announced that filming had officially wrapped.[26]
On August 2, 2024, filming for Season Two commenced,[27] and wrapped on February 1, 2025.[28]
On August 8, 2025, filming for Season Three commenced.[5]

- This is a second attempt at the franchise, following the release of Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010) and its sequel Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (2013), by 20th Century Fox.
- Following the announcement of the series, Logan Lerman, who portrayed Percy Jackson in the films, sent out a tweet, showcasing his support for the new adaptation.[29] Walker Scobell has expressed interest in him playing Triton.[30]
- This is Lance Reddick's final Disney related project and his final television performance, following his unexpected death on March 17, 2023 on the same year before the show's airing. The series is dedicated to his memory.
- Rick Riordan pitched to Disney the idea of a television series revival and offered to write three new Percy Jackson novels in preparation for the series. Despite work commencing on the new novels, he was later told by Disney that he did not need to do that and that they were happy with just developing the television series.[31]
- Writer Joe Tracz previously worked on The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical.
- The character of Argus, a multi-eyed being that served as Camp Half-Blood's chief of security, was supposed to appear in the first season, but was cut due to budgetary restrictions.[32]
- Toby Stephens, Nick Boraine, Jessica Parker Kennedy, and Bear McCreary worked on Jonathan E. Steinberg's previous television series Black Sails. Director Anders Engström also worked on Steinberg's other series See.
