- “You are not lead officers! You are one hit wonders who should go back to meter-maiding and slinging pawpsicles!”
- ―Hoggbottom telling Nick and Judy off for disobeying Chief Bogo.
Captain Fern Hoggbottom is a major antagonist in Disney's 2025 animated feature film Zootopia 2. She is a Scottish-accented boar who serves as captain of the S.N.F.R. force associated with the Zootopia Police Department alongside her partner Truffler.
Background[]
Personality[]
Hoggbottom is a no-nonsense, hardworking captain of the S.N.F.R. police force who appears to have a bit of distaste for Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps going against Bogo's wishes, telling them to back off while the veterans do the work. She is also quick to anger and judgement, such as when Nick insulted her during a meeting with Chief Bogo. A heavy sniffer, Hoggbottom is skilled in detecting clues that would lead her and the other officers to Nick and Judy's whereabouts.
Despite being good at her job and willing to do whatever it takes to abide by the law, she does have a bit of restraint when following certain orders, including when she was being forced by Milton Lynxley to shoot a lethal tranquilizer dart at Judy Hopps and his own son. She hesitated from killing them and lowered her weapon down, only firing the dart due to an accident. That being said, she is not one to hesitate in knocking someone out in order to apprehend them, such as when Pawbert Lynxley lost his mind in trying to burn Agnes De'Snake's house and she struck the back of his head with a frying pan.
At the end, with the restoration of the Reptile Ravine, she is seen to be much more joyful, celebrating Nick and Judy's success at Gary De'Snake's family's house, sharing a piece of a giant Jumbo Pop with Clawhauser.
Physical appearance[]
Captain Hoggbottom is a razorback covered in lavender-purple and grey fur, with monochrome hairs sticking out from the sides and top of her head in what appears to be a mohawk. She has a thick pair of dark eyebrows above one brown eye and a blind eye, along with a stubby pink snout. A burly boar, she is also equipped with two tusks protruding upward and outward from her small-fanged mouth beneath a pair of tall, pointy ears; one of which has a golden ring and a hole near the top.
Hoggbottom wears a black T.U.S.K. uniform underneath a dark grey vest with a T.U.S.K. badge on the pocket and a walkie-talkie. She also wears protective pads on her lower arms possibly used for defense.
Role in the film[]
Captain Hoggbottom appears to be one of the police officers with close ties to the ZPD, particularly Chief Bogo.
At the start of the film, Hoggbottom was present at a meeting hosted by Chief Bogo to strategize over taking down smuggler Antony Snootley, only for Judy and Nick to go rogue to try and arrest him themselves. Bogo inadvertently blew their cover over the radio, prompting Antony to flee. In the ensuing car chase, Hoggbottom took point and ordered Judy and Nick to stand down, but the chase soon turned chaotic, resulting in the destruction of Ebenezer Lynxley's statue. Everyone then returned to Precinct One, where Hoggbottom, along with the other cops, complained to Bogo over Judy and Nick's actions. When Judy and Nick were called into the office, Judy tried to explain she found evidence that a snake was smuggled into Zootopia but was ignored. Judy then tried quoting regulations that justified their actions, but Hoggbottom retorted that neither of them were lead officers and stated that they are just "one hit wonders" should be demoted back to their old jobs. Nick then proceeded to mock Hoggbottom, who began to squeal furiously, only for Bogo to shut her down and ordered everyone but Judy and Nick out of his office so he could deal their punishment.
Hoggbottom was later present at Lynxley Manor after Gary De'Snake abducted Milton Lynxley. She happened on the scene only after Gary accidentally fanged Bogo and spotted Judy seemingly attacking the incapacitated Chief with one of Gary's fangs. Falling for Kitty Lynxley's lie that Judy and Nick were in league with Gary, Hoggbottom attempted to arrest them, but all three suspects managed to escape. Hoggbottom later lead the task force to find and arrest Judy and Nick on orders of Mayor Winddancer, who was under pressure by Milton.
Hoggbottom and her task force tracked the fugitives to Marsh Market. Despite flushing them out of the Reptile Hangout, Judy and Nick managed to escape again by taking the Red Line water tube out of the city. Hoggbottom would continue to pursue them to the Honeymoon Lodge, having determined their location upon finding the shattered remains of the Carrot Pen, and sent her two goat officers to scale the cliff to arrest them. In the resulting altercation, the lodge split in two and Nick was captured while Judy got away with the aid of Gary and Pawbert Lynxley. As Winddancer attempted to interrogate Nick, who suggested he trying pulling her out of his hat, Hoggbottom piped in that the fox was messing with him, to which the mayor pridefully insisted he knew that.
The next day, Hoggbottom tracked Pawbert's phone and led her people to Sahara Square near the Weather Wall. Giving pursuit once more through the Burning Mammal festival, Hoggbottom was contacted by Milton, who ordered her to shoot Judy with a poisonous dart. The moment she hears this, she becomes appalled that Milton gave her an order to execute a former officer in broad daylight, and she refuses to pull the trigger even when the lynx angrily ordered her to do it. When she accidentally shot the dart, she can only watch in horror as it is about to hit Judy—until it misses thanks to the timely intervention of Nick, Nibbles, and Flash. With Judy, Gary, Pawbert, Nibbles and Nick entering the Weather Wall, Hoggbottom was then unable to pursue as the wall started to engage.
Hoggbottom and Truffler later arrive in Reptile Ravine, the former knocking out crazed Pawbert with a frying pan after he attempted to burn down the town. The group then triumphantly emerged from the hidden town to meet the press as it became publicly known that the Lynxleys took credits for Agnes De'Snake's designs, resulting in the whole family's arrest.
Trivia[]
- Her name, "Hoggbottom", was confirmed by Jared Bush[1] and serves as a reference to the term "razorback", which refers to domestic pigs that have gone into the wild. She is a wild boar, which aligns with the meaning of the term.
- She was going to be a part of the first film in a group of police officers known as the Razorbacks. Although cut, she and the S.N.F.R. force return in the sequel. Their uniforms labeled "S.N.F.R." could be a reference to the T.U.S.K force of Razorbacks, which was also removed from the final version of the first film.
